Overview
The Yamaha 212 series, comprising the 212X and 212SS models, presents a versatile platform designed primarily for performance water sports while maintaining family-friendly attributes. Both models share nearly identical specifications, differing mainly in cosmetic details. Measuring 21 feet 4 inches in length overall with an 8 feet 6 inches beam, these boats feature jet drives that contribute to a shallow draft of just 16 inches, enhancing their maneuverability and suitability for various water conditions.
Hull and Propulsion System
Beneath the waterline, the 212 series employs a deep V-hull design with dual lifting strakes that transition into a reverse chine, optimizing hydrodynamic efficiency and stability. The jet propulsion system is notable for its innovative thrust deflection mechanism: in neutral, the thrust is deflected, and at the first detent forward, the thrust remains slightly deflected downward to improve low-speed maneuverability. When fully engaged forward, the thrust aligns directly, maximizing propulsion efficiency. This configuration, with jet drives aligned flush with the transom rather than below the hull, results in minimal bow rise—approximately five degrees—during acceleration, preserving forward visibility.
Performance and Handling
Powered by twin 1812cc Yamaha four-stroke, four-cylinder marine engines, the 212 series delivers impressive performance metrics. At full throttle (7,650 RPM), the boat achieves a top speed of 56 miles per hour while consuming 25.1 gallons per hour, yielding a fuel efficiency of 2.23 miles per gallon and an estimated range of 100 miles with a 10% fuel reserve. Optimal cruising occurs at 5,000 RPM, where the boat travels at 27.2 miles per hour, burns 8.5 gallons per hour, and attains 3.19 miles per gallon, extending range to approximately 144 miles. Acceleration is particularly noteworthy, with the boat planing in just 2.2 seconds and reaching 30 miles per hour within 4 seconds. Handling characteristics include highly responsive steering with a lock-to-lock range of only three-quarters of a turn, enabling sharp, exhilarating turns. However, aggressive steering inputs can cause the boat to spin out rather than carve through turns, suggesting a need for moderated helm control during tight maneuvers.
Operational Features and Controls
The helm layout emphasizes ergonomic design and intuitive control placement. On the left side, dual ignition switches, a blower rocker switch, and circuit breakers are conveniently positioned. The upper dash panel houses three analog gauges—tachometers flanking a speedometer—with embedded digital displays providing up to 18 operational parameters. Additional switches and circuit breakers are located on the right side. Below the main panel, a stereo system is integrated directly at the helm, complemented by a 12-volt outlet, MP3 port, ballast tank rocker switch, and cruise/no-wake control. Engine controls are mounted at a comfortable 45-degree angle, facilitating ease of use from both seated and flip-up bolster positions. A courtesy light above the controls enhances visibility in low-light conditions. Visibility from the helm is well-considered, with approximately nine inches of unobstructed sightline above the windshield frame, which remains below the operator's eye level when seated or elevated on the bolster.
Engine and Maintenance
The twin Yamaha engines are purpose-built, computer-controlled, and digitally managed to ensure continuous performance optimization. Maintenance access is user-friendly, with oil and air filters readily reachable. Each engine drives a three-bladed stainless steel impeller through a 155-millimeter exhaust port, contributing to the boat's robust propulsion capabilities. Notably, the twin-engine configuration offers redundancy; in the event of an engine failure, the boat can maintain planing speeds of approximately 25 miles per hour on a single engine, providing a safety margin for returning to shore.
Conclusion
The Yamaha 212 series combines high-performance water sports capabilities with thoughtful design elements that enhance usability and comfort. Its shallow draft, powerful twin engines, and responsive handling make it a compelling choice for enthusiasts seeking exhilarating acceleration and maneuverability. Ergonomic helm controls and practical maintenance features further contribute to a well-rounded boating experience. Overall, the 212 series delivers performance and versatility typically found in larger vessels, making it a noteworthy option in the 21-foot sport boat category.
