V3 Cooling System Upgrades

  1. New heat exchangers with titanium nitride coated tubes reducing the need for anodes that need to be changed frequently
  2. More robust seawater pumps which are longer lasting and provide better self-priming.
  3. PWM controlled variable pump speed to match variations in demand to prolong the life of the pump, reduce noise, and reduce power consumption
  4. CAN controlled pumps reducing the need for physical relays, making the system more robust and allowing for future OTA software updates which roll out improvements without the need for human intervention.
  5. A larger, more robust seawater strainer with larger sea cock to reduce clogging, allow more water flow and eliminate corrosion potential.
  6. Higher flow cooling with larger cooling lines to reduce heat buildup at higher speeds over longer distances
  7. Simplified CAN Bus system to improve the overall system architecture, better utilize space, provide easier access to data logging for troubleshooting and make the system more reliable.
  8. New SW:
    1. Better thermal management with additional temperature sensors
    2. Smoother speed derating based on over-temp conditions for a wider range of components
    3. DC charging improvements to reduce charging interruptions
  9. Replacement of the swim ladder with a unit which is more corrosion resistant.
  10. Bow eye reinforcement to prevent separation from the starboard plate under load
  11. Sun awning socket reinforcement to prevent potential for damage in high winds.
  12. Addition of drainage lines for cubbies and areas where water can build up.
  13. Bilge outlet relocation to prevent sea water ingress through the bilge

Boat Test Review on BoatTest.com

Overview

The ELX 8000 center console by X Shore is a distinctive 26-foot sport boat that stands apart from typical center consoles in its class. Designed by Swedish entrepreneur Conrad Bergstrom, known for his innovative approach, the ELX 8000 is purpose-built to handle challenging offshore waters, particularly those around Sweden where conditions can rapidly deteriorate. Unlike many electric boats intended solely for lakes and rivers, this model features a high bow and open transom inspired by ocean racing sailboats, ensuring safety and seaworthiness in rough conditions. Its design emphasizes stability, safety, and performance, making it arguably the safest 26-foot boat tested.

Exterior Design and Hull Features

Measuring 25 feet 10 inches in length overall and displacing 5,560 pounds empty, the ELX 8000 boasts a high freeboard of four feet eight inches forward to prevent green water from coming aboard. Any water that does enter flushes immediately through the open transom. The hull incorporates hard chines, two running strakes, and an 8-degree dead rise at the transom, enhancing efficiency and stability. Its plumb bow and sharp entry slice through waves rather than plowing into them, reducing pitching and improving ride comfort. The bow is protected by a composite pad for docking, and the propeller is housed in a pocket to reduce draft and increase thrust while minimizing vibration and noise.

Powertrain and Technical Innovations

The ELX 8000 is powered by a sophisticated electric drivetrain located forward under the center console helm. It features two 63-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery packs totaling 126 kilowatt-hours, supplying energy to an electric motor rated at 175 kilowatts peak power and 145 kilowatts continuous. The propulsion system uses a 19 by 24 five-bladed propeller that delivers increased torque and smoother operation compared to conventional outboard props. Notably, the motor RPM reduction is achieved through two counter-rotating magnetic rings in the transmission instead of traditional gears, eliminating friction, vibration, noise, and maintenance associated with gear systems. The drivetrain electronics box integrates the charger, inverter, DC-DC converter, and power distribution, with a dedicated cooling system circulating fluid through a raw water heat exchanger to maintain optimal temperatures.

Performance and Handling

During testing, the ELX 8000 demonstrated a top speed of 33.5 miles per hour at 1,660 RPM, the lowest top-end RPM recorded in boat testing to date. At this speed, the boat achieved an endurance of 39 minutes covering 22 miles. The most economical planning speed was 22.5 miles per hour at 1,200 RPM, yielding a range of 29 miles and a duration of one hour and 16 minutes. The boat’s slowest speed was 3.25 miles per hour at 200 RPM, consuming just 1.98 kilowatts and allowing a theoretical range of 189 miles. The throttle control is highly precise, enabling fine adjustments in kilowatt usage, and incorporates safety features to prevent unintended acceleration. The power delivery is managed through three modes—Silence (docking mode), Cruiser, and Speedster—each limiting kilowatt consumption to optimize handling and safety.

Torque, Efficiency, and Range Considerations

Torque, a critical measure of rotational force, is effectively harnessed by the ELX 8000’s large propeller, enabling strong acceleration despite the boat’s 6,500-pound test weight. Acceleration from a dead stop was notably brisk. Kilowatt consumption per mile was analyzed, showing that traveling at speeds above 10 miles per hour consumes energy at a similar rate, suggesting that higher speeds may be more time-efficient without sacrificing range. While the ELX 8000 is not designed for long offshore fishing excursions, it is well-suited for coastal angling and day trips, with modular design options to accommodate serious fishing gear. The boat’s ability to cut through waves with minimal spray and no hull pounding enhances comfort and control in various sea states.

Charging and Range Management

The ELX 8000 employs a battery capacity management system that reserves 10% of charge to ensure safe return to port. When battery levels reach this threshold, the boat automatically enters a range extender mode that limits power output, providing approximately 10 miles of additional range. Charging options include fast charging, which can replenish the battery in one to two hours, and slower 240-volt charging that takes four to ten hours. The boat uses standard automotive plugs with adapters for marina shore power and home charging. Infrastructure for electric boat charging is expanding, particularly in Norway and Canada, with many marinas equipped with 240-volt, 50-amp shore power capable of overnight charging.

Conclusion

The X Shore ELX 8000 represents a significant advancement in sustainable boating, combining innovative Swedish design with cutting-edge electric propulsion technology. Its seaworthy hull design, advanced drivetrain, and thoughtful power management deliver a safe, efficient, and enjoyable boating experience. While range limitations currently restrict its use for extended offshore trips, the ELX 8000 is well-suited for coastal cruising and day fishing excursions. With growing charging infrastructure and a focus on environmental responsibility, this boat exemplifies the future of recreational boating powered by clean energy.
