World Cat 400DC-X: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Overview

The World Cat 400 DCX Island is a dual console catamaran that the manufacturer claims offers best-in-class range and serves as a world-class fishing platform as well as an entertaining venue suitable for big game fishing or social gatherings on sandbars. This review evaluates the boat’s features, performance, and overall usability to determine how well it meets those claims.

Exterior Design and Cockpit

The transom area of the 400 DCX Island stands out due to its substantial beam and practical features, including a large ladder nestled between twin Mercury 600 horsepower engines—an option over the standard twin Yamaha 450s. The transom provides nearly 12 feet of working space, with a width ranging from 32 to 56 inches, allowing easy access to the engines and a freshwater washdown shower. The cockpit is spacious, featuring multiple seating configurations and ample storage. Notably, the starboard side houses a summer kitchen with a freshwater sink, electric grill, and refrigerator, while the port side includes an insulated fish box and live well. High gunnels, strategically placed rod holders, cup holders, and pop-up cleats enhance functionality and safety. The main seating area offers up to 16 comfortable positions, with flexible arrangements that can prioritize either additional seating or fishing amenities. The upholstery throughout is high quality, featuring diamond stitch textures and integrated stainless steel grab rails for safety.

Helm and Electronics

The helm station is well-appointed with two 16-inch Garmin displays flanking a Mercury engine display, providing comprehensive control and monitoring. The steering wheel is complemented by digital throttle controls and joystick piloting for the outboards. The helm chair includes dual bolsters, flip-down armrests, and a raised angled footrest for comfort. Additional features include VHF radio with an overhead speaker for clear communication, a premium sound system with multiple speakers and a subwoofer, and air conditioning vents at both the captain’s and companion’s seats. A moon roof above the helm can be opened to allow fresh air circulation. The boat’s generator is optional, with house systems such as air conditioning and the grill powered by a large lithium battery bank, offering an estimated six to eight hours of usage depending on load.

Interior Living Spaces and Accommodations

Beneath the helm console is a spacious head compartment with 6 feet 4 inches of headroom, featuring an electric flush toilet, pedestal sink, storage, and a large shower with a handheld wand. Air conditioning vents maintain comfort and freshness in this area. The port console includes a versatile space that converts from a couch to a sizable bed via a fold-out platform, suitable for occasional overnight use. This area also contains storage, a microwave powered by the lithium battery system, natural light, and climate control vents, making it a functional and comfortable retreat. Forward of the cockpit, a wide walkthrough with an innovative sliding window provides easy access to the bow seating area, which is protected by a large hardtop and optional sunshade. This forward deck offers seating for at least eight guests with integrated tables, cup holders, power outlets, and stainless steel grab rails, making it a favored social space.

Power and Performance

The test boat was equipped with twin Mercury 600 V12 outboards, achieving a wide-open throttle speed of 54 miles per hour at 6,150 RPM. The optimal cruise speed was 28 miles per hour at 3,500 RPM, consuming 29.3 gallons per hour and delivering a fuel efficiency of 0.9 miles per gallon. This translated to a range of approximately 395 statute miles while maintaining a 10% fuel reserve from the 464-gallon capacity. Acceleration was brisk, with 0 to 10 miles per hour in 3.5 seconds, 0 to 20 in 5.5 seconds, 0 to 30 in 8 seconds, and 0 to 40 in about 10 seconds. Compared to a similarly sized monohull with the same engines, the 400 DCX demonstrated a 32% greater range. The standard twin Yamaha 450 V8 engines offered about a 30% improvement in range over the Mercury setup, presenting buyers with a choice between top-end speed and extended cruising range. The boat’s wide beam and catamaran hull form provide exceptional stability and a smooth ride even in choppy conditions, with minimal heel during sharp turns and excellent handling characteristics.

Conclusion

The World Cat 400 DCX Island impresses as a versatile and well-designed dual console catamaran that excels in both fishing and entertaining roles. Its spacious and thoughtfully arranged cockpit, advanced helm electronics, comfortable interior accommodations, and strong performance metrics combine to offer a compelling package. The catamaran hull delivers superior stability and ride comfort compared to monohulls, while the flexible engine options allow owners to prioritize either speed or range. Overall, the 400 DCX Island stands out as a stable, spacious, and capable day boat with features that support extended outings and diverse activities on the water.
