World Cat 290 CC: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Overview

The WorldCat 290 Center Console is a catamaran designed to maximize space, storage, and utility, particularly for offshore fishing. Its wide beam and twin-hull design provide a spacious layout with numerous practical features that enhance both comfort and functionality.

Exterior Design and Deck Layout

The boat features an expansive walkthrough between twin Suzuki 254 outboard engines, offering 26 inches of clearance and a sturdy door with a full-length piano hinge. The quarters on both sides include jump seats that are easy to deploy and stow, complemented by padded bolsters ranging from 20 to 25.5 inches in height. Multiple rod holders and drink holders are integrated into the design, along with cutting boards on either side. Below the bolsters, there is ample line storage and dedicated compartments for lure tubes. The starboard side houses tackle drawers and additional storage. The boat’s wide-open bow area, characteristic of a catamaran, provides extensive storage, including two large fish boxes with gasketed lids, gas-assist struts, and channels for water drainage. Forward of the console, there is a cooler, anchor line storage, a bait well, and a Lumar windlass. The side decks contain matching fish lockers measuring 14 inches deep by 18.5 inches wide and 55 inches long, which utilize reliable diaphragm pumps rather than macerators to prevent clogging. Overboard scuppers in both quarters efficiently drain any water shipped aboard.

Helm and Control Station

The helm area is spacious and well-organized, featuring a live well integrated into the leaning post, painted blue inside to reduce bait shock. The leaning post also includes a fiberglass-lined seat top and a footrest that doubles as a rear-facing seat with grab rails. The helm offers excellent visibility with a footrest that allows the operator to sit comfortably with bolsters up or down. The switch layout is orderly, with the horn distinctly colored red and positioned separately, and circuit breakers located above the switches. Engine monitoring gauges are placed to the port side of the switches. Overhead, there are additional electrical controls and spreader lights. Electronics storage is lockable, with a removable cover that stows inside the center console, providing ample space for custom electronics installation. Side windows open forward to scoop air onto the helm, improving ventilation. Battery storage is located beneath the seats, with drainage incorporated into the footrest area.

Power and Systems

The WorldCat 290CC is powered by twin Suzuki 254 four-stroke outboards, each supported by independent fuel and electrical systems, enhancing reliability and providing a 'get home' capability. The boat carries two separate 125-gallon fuel tanks, one for each engine. The use of diaphragm pumps for fish lockers instead of macerators increases system dependability by reducing the risk of clogging.

Storage and Utility Features

Storage is a key strength of the WorldCat 290CC, with numerous compartments designed for fishing gear and general utility. Rod storage is lockable and conveniently located. The boat’s wide-open bow and catamaran hull form allow for extensive storage options not typically found on monohulls. The inclusion of overboard drains and gasketed lids on fish boxes ensures that water is effectively managed, maintaining a clean and dry deck environment.

Conclusion

The WorldCat 290 Center Console is a thoughtfully designed offshore fishing platform that leverages its catamaran hull to provide unmatched space, storage, and functionality. Its well-laid-out helm, reliable systems, and practical deck features make it a compelling choice for anglers seeking a durable and efficient fishing boat. The design emphasizes utility and ease of use, making it a standout in its class.
