Wellcraft 28: BoatTEST Review

Boat Test Review on BoatTest.com

Overview

At the Palm Beach Boat Show, the Wellcraft 28 T-Top made its world premiere, showcasing a thoughtfully designed boat aimed at the action and adventure boating market. This model features a nine-foot, six-inch beam—the widest in its class—providing ample internal volume and spaciousness for a variety of activities. The hull employs Wellcraft's proprietary WISE (Wellcraft Infusion Structure Engineering) technology, delivering a strong, durable structure optimized for weight and performance, complemented by a traditional plumb bow designed for excellent handling in rough waters.

Exterior Design and Deck Layout

The exterior of the 28 T-Top is distinguished by a substantial rub rail that offers protection during docking without compromising aesthetics, highlighted by an attractive blue and black color scheme. The transom area includes a telescopic swim ladder with a grab handle and a fresh water pressurized shower for convenience. The cockpit offers three configurable layouts: a lounge with L-shaped seating, a relax version featuring a large sun pad with storage beneath, and a Barracuda fishing version equipped with a live well, fish box, rod holders, and a flip-down seat. A transom door fully seals the cockpit, and a side boarding door facilitates easy access from docks or when handling large catches. Additionally, a wet bar with optional gas barbecue grill and refrigerator enhances onboard entertaining. Storage is ample, with compartments beneath the aft bench secured by magnetic catches and rubber gaskets to prevent rattling. The T-top frame is notably robust and over-engineered, providing solid support and durability, with steps on both gunwales aiding access to docks or the hardtop.

Helm and Bridge Features

Under the T-top, the helm station is equipped with twin captain seats upholstered in high-quality woven vinyl with accent stitching. While armrests are absent, the helm sides provide secure support in rough conditions. The helm layout is well thought out, featuring dual 15-inch Garmin displays (with a single display option available), a wireless Scanstrut charger, Mercury engine screens, and waterproof switches including bilge pump controls. The helm also includes two cup holders, a small glove box, and a passenger grab handle. Bow thruster controls are conveniently located to port of the wheel, allowing for precise maneuvering. Audio system controls are within easy reach to quickly mute sound for communication. Overhead, two JL Audio speakers contribute to a premium sound experience. The windshield is offered in full or half configurations to balance protection and ventilation. Safety is enhanced by a high gunnel and grab handle along the port side, with additional cup holders and U-shaped padded seating at the bow that includes storage beneath, dedicated fender storage, and a cleanly integrated anchor locker with accessible windlass controls. A dedicated space for a YETI cooler and a pedestal table mount support comfort and socializing at the bow.

Mechanical and Safety Features

The mechanical spaces are designed for ease of inspection and maintenance, with all critical components elevated to avoid saltwater exposure. The boat lacks traditional through hulls, relying instead on glued transducers. Bilge pumps are located aft and tested to ensure functionality. Battery switches are easily accessible behind the starboard seat back, with two start batteries and a house battery arranged for convenience. Electrical components and bus bars are mounted high to protect against water intrusion, and breakers are positioned within reach yet shielded from the elements. The fresh water tank is located beneath the mechanical hatch in the aft cockpit. Safety compliance with US Coast Guard regulations is emphasized as a priority before operation.

Interior Living Spaces and Accommodations

Access to the cabin is via a gas-assisted hatch with wide, beveled steps designed for safe entry even in rough seas. Inside, the cabin offers standing headroom for individuals around 5'8" and taller, with a toilet, sink on the port side, and storage compartments on the starboard side. The interior includes a Molle system for hanging gear and additional storage cubbies. Instrumentation for monitoring water and waste levels is conveniently located, along with two fuel shutoff valves. The cabin converts into a spacious berth by folding down cushions and steps, creating a comfortable sleeping area with ample legroom. USB ports and electrical outlets powered by an inverter connected to the lithium battery allow for charging devices and running small appliances, enhancing onboard comfort during overnight stays.

Conclusion

The Wellcraft 28 T-Top presents a versatile and well-engineered platform suitable for a range of boating activities, from fishing to leisure cruising. Its wide beam, durable hull construction, and thoughtfully designed layouts provide both comfort and functionality. The robust mechanical design, comprehensive safety features, and premium helm electronics contribute to a confident and enjoyable boating experience. Overall, the 28 T-Top reflects Wellcraft's commitment to quality and innovation in the action/adventure boat segment.
