Wellcraft 26: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Overview

The Wellcraft 262 is designed as a versatile center console boat that caters to both fishing enthusiasts and families. It builds upon the lineage of Wellcraft's 22 and 24-foot models, maintaining the brand's distinctive design DNA while incorporating thoughtful features that enhance usability and comfort for a broad range of activities.

Fishing Features and Cockpit Layout

The stern of the Wellcraft 262 is equipped with numerous fishing amenities. It includes a service platform for easy engine access and a generous number of rod holders—23 in total—strategically placed across the transom, gunnels, rigging station, and rocket launcher style mounts. The boat features multiple bait wells, including a 27-gallon well in the port quarter and a 17-gallon well on the starboard side, which doubles as a fresh water sink and has a clear window for monitoring bait. The cockpit offers ample working space measuring 34 inches by six feet, eight inches, with a safe 28-inch depth. Notably, the deck drains are larger than typical at three and a half inches, allowing efficient drainage directly overboard. A 20-inch wide dive or boarding door on the starboard side adds convenience. The rigging station serves multiple purposes, including as a cutting surface, and includes holders for hooks, drinks, and rods. Storage is well thought out with tackle box compartments, pull-out bins on the side decks, and macerated 50-gallon fish boxes. Rod storage accommodates lengths up to eight feet, with padded bulkheads to protect reels.

Family-Friendly Bow Features

The bow area is designed with family comfort in mind, featuring two forward-facing bench seats with removable backrests and an aft-facing seat forward of a centrally located cooler. The cooler is self-draining and insulated, and can be repositioned to create additional seating, fostering a social atmosphere when combined with an optional table. Additional self-draining storage compartments on both sides can double as fish lockers. The premium sound system includes numerous speakers throughout the bow area. One minor drawback noted is that the seat backs, while comfortable and secure when occupied, tend to vibrate loose and fall when unoccupied, suggesting a locking mechanism would improve functionality.

Console and Operational Features

The console is protected by a standard hardtop with a curved design to shed water and prevent pooling around antennas. An optional compartmentalized electronics box provides separate storage spaces, useful for charter operations. The console is finished in black with lighted switches and features a four-inch SmartCraft display alongside a ten-inch moving map display, with room for additional electronics. Controls for Lenco trim tabs are present but positioned where they could be more accessible. The steering wheel is tilt-adjustable and equipped with a steering knob. The stereo system offers connectivity options conveniently located for the companion. Footrests accommodate both standing and seated positions, and the helm seats include flip-down armrests and bolsters. The console door opens upward rather than sideways, allowing six feet of standing headroom inside. Storage compartments and the main electrical panel with dual battery switches are located within the console, which can be optionally fitted with a head. Additional options include alternative leaning posts, snap-in carpet, single engine power, and hull color variations.

Power and Performance

Powered by twin Mercury 250 Verado outboard engines equipped with 21-pitch, three-bladed Mirage Plus propellers, the Wellcraft 262 achieved a top speed of 56.8 miles per hour at 6150 RPM during testing. Its most economical cruise speed was 32 miles per hour at 3500 RPM, consuming 16 gallons per hour and providing a range of approximately 284 miles while reserving 10% of its 158-gallon fuel capacity. The boat demonstrated impressive handling characteristics, reaching planing speed in four seconds and accelerating to 20 miles per hour in 6.1 seconds and 30 miles per hour in 8.7 seconds. Although testing conditions did not allow verification of the hull's offshore pedigree, the boat handled self-generated chop smoothly without hull slap. Turning response was quick and authoritative, with no propeller ventilation observed at any speed.

Conclusion

The Wellcraft 262 successfully integrates features that appeal to both anglers and families, offering a well-balanced combination of fishing functionality and comfortable social spaces. Its thoughtful design, robust performance, and versatile layout make it a capable and enjoyable center console boat suitable for a variety of boating activities.
