Wellcraft 24: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Overview

The Wellcraft 241 Fisherman is a versatile bay boat designed primarily for fishing in shallow waters while also accommodating family comfort. Measuring 24 feet 4 inches in length overall with a beam of 8 feet 6 inches and a draft of 31 inches, this boat balances functionality with thoughtful design features. Its empty weight is 4,200 pounds, and with full fuel and two passengers, the test weight was approximately 5,142 pounds.

Exterior Design and Deck Layout

The aft casting deck is spacious and features a non-skid surface, providing stability even when moving about. It measures 7 feet 6 inches across with an 18-inch step up and a center section width of 1 foot 9 and a half inches. A flip-up bench seat spans 36 inches and is supported by dual struts on each side. Beneath the side decks are live wells with lift and lock hatches for secure access. Flip-up cleats reduce tripping hazards, while rod holders and tackle storage compartments are conveniently located forward of the casting deck. Two two-inch deck drains facilitate easy washdowns. Under the leaning post, a 72-quart carry-on cooler is stored, complemented by multiple rod holders both on the post and the optional hardtop. The hardtop itself is well-crafted with a slight curve to promote water runoff, preventing pooling near antennas. It includes spreader lights, three-color helm lighting, and an optional electronics box accessible from both front and rear, ideal for separating gear between captain and passengers. The side decks are 20 inches wide, and the foredeck is accessed via a nine-inch step, offering ample walking space with a raised tow rail for safety. The foredeck also features pre-rigging for a trolling motor, a pedestal base for seating, an aerated live well in the step, and abundant storage including a dedicated five-gallon bucket space and a padded, self-draining recessed area that can be converted into a family seating zone with cushions and removable backs.

Console and Helm Features

The console presents a clean black panel framed in white, with a wraparound acrylic windshield that effectively deflects wind, though minor distortion is noted at the curved edges. The compass is centrally mounted on the console, though repositioning it directly in front of the helm would be preferable. Toggle switches at the top of the panel illuminate when activated. The helm is equipped with a Yamaha multifunction gauge and a 10-inch GPS map, with additional space for more electronics. The stainless steel steering wheel is mounted on a tilt base and includes a steering knob for ease of handling. Controls for Lenco trim tabs, jack plate, power pole, and Yamaha’s digital controller are conveniently placed within reach. To the companion side, a Fusion stereo system with connectivity is installed. The fixed 42-inch-wide bench seat offers both low and high footrests, enhancing comfort during operation.

Private Accommodations and Storage

The boat includes a head compartment with an upward-opening door that provides a 26 and a half inch-wide entrance and 4 feet 9 inches of overhead clearance. Storage compartments are integrated into both port and starboard bulkheads, secured by snap-in panels. An electrical panel with a battery switch is located on the port side, allowing access behind the console. The head compartment can be customized as an empty space, fitted with a porta-potty, or equipped with a pump-out head, catering to various user preferences.

Power and Performance

Powered by a single Yamaha F-250 engine turning a 17T by 15 and a half propeller, the 241 Fisherman achieved a top speed of 50.1 miles per hour at 6,100 RPM during testing. Its most efficient cruise speed was 23.2 miles per hour at 3,000 RPM, consuming 6.7 gallons per hour and yielding an estimated range of 273 statute miles with a 10% fuel reserve from the 87-gallon capacity. The boat planes quickly, reaching planing speed in 4.1 seconds, 20 miles per hour in 6.3 seconds, and 30 miles per hour in 9.3 seconds, all with minimal bow rise. Mechanical steering and engine controls provide direct feedback, with 6.5 turns lock-to-lock on the wheel. Handling characteristics include smooth transitions through wake-induced S-turns without hull slap or spray, good agility in tight turns, and stable tracking in larger arcs. Power turns maintain grip without loss of control, with only minor prop ventilation if power is held aggressively into the turn. Overall, the vessel offers a comfortable and responsive ride suitable for both fishing and family outings.

Conclusion

The Wellcraft 241 Fisherman is a well-conceived bay boat that successfully integrates fishing functionality with family-friendly features. Its spacious deck layout, thoughtful storage solutions, and comfortable helm arrangement support a variety of activities. The boat's strong performance, responsive handling, and efficient powertrain make it a capable and enjoyable platform for shallow water fishing and recreational boating. This combination of attributes positions the 241 Fisherman as a versatile choice for anglers and families alike.
