Wellcraft 210 Sportsman: BoatTEST Review
Overview
The Wellcraft 210 Sportsman represents the company's renewed focus on the small boat market, offering a versatile fish and ski package designed to satisfy family needs. Built on Wellcraft's reputation for solid construction, this 21-foot vessel combines spaciousness and functionality within a trailerable 8-foot 6-inch beam, making it an attractive option for a variety of recreational boating activities.
Exterior Design and Deck Layout
Upon boarding the 210 Sportsman, one is immediately struck by the generous and open cockpit layout. Unlike many boats in this size category, the space between the helm and passenger seat is remarkably wide, comparable to boats in the 30-foot range. The bow area serves as a comfortable seating spot favored by children, equipped with stainless steel grab rails and drink holders. Beneath the bow seats are gasketed, gas-assist storage compartments suitable for fish storage, with overboard drains for convenience. The forward section also includes an anchor locker with a stainless steel hawse pipe and bow roller, reflecting thoughtful engineering. The cockpit offers 39 inches of clearance between seats, with removable seating to further expand open space. Additional features include a gas-assisted ski equipment locker, a standard bimini top, and an optional arch that adds rod holders. The aft cockpit houses two gas-assisted, gasketed fish lockers with macerators and overboard discharges, as well as a ski pylon mounted on a stainless steel rail, emphasizing the boat's family-friendly versatility.
Helm and Controls
The helm station is designed with user comfort and functionality in mind. It features non-glare backing on switches and two multifunction gauges that provide data such as gallons per hour, speed, and fuel consumption. There is ample space for installing a navigation package. The stainless steel steering wheel includes a suicide knob for ease of handling, and conveniently placed stereo controls allow operation without reaching across the console. The helm seat adjusts forward and backward and pivots, though it lacks vertical adjustment. Footrests are provided in two positions to enhance operator comfort during extended use.
Interior Amenities
The port side console houses a compact head compartment, equipped with a courtesy light and an enclosed toilet paper holder to protect supplies from moisture. While the space is somewhat cramped, requiring a crouched posture, it is adequate for emergency use and includes padded surfaces for safety. The starboard side offers ample storage space and a cooler, contributing to the boat's practicality for day outings.
Power and Performance
The 210 Sportsman is offered with a choice of outboard engines including Mercury Optimax, Evinrude E-Tec, and Yamaha 4-Stroke models, ranging from 150 to 250 horsepower. The test boat was equipped with a 200 horsepower Mercury Optimax, delivering balanced mid-range performance. On calm saltwater, the boat achieved a top speed of 45.3 miles per hour at 5550 RPM. Cruising at 4000 RPM yielded a speed of 32.2 miles per hour with a fuel consumption of 10.7 gallons per hour, resulting in an estimated range of 272 miles with a 10% fuel reserve. Acceleration was brisk, with the boat reaching 30 miles per hour in just over seven seconds and planing in approximately three and a half seconds. Handling characteristics were predictable and stable; the boat tracked straight through waves without pounding or spray intrusion, maintained course during full-speed turns without sliding, and exhibited no cavitation with the engine trimmed fully down. Trim tabs were installed but proved unnecessary during testing.
Conclusion
The Wellcraft 210 Sportsman successfully bridges the gap between family-friendly versatility and solid performance in a compact, trailerable package. Its spacious layout, thoughtful engineering, and dependable handling reflect Wellcraft's heritage in performance boats, now adapted for smaller craft enthusiasts. With multiple power options and practical features tailored to both fishing and skiing activities, the 210 Sportsman stands as a well-rounded choice for families seeking an efficient and enjoyable day boat.
