Two Oceans 555: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Overview

The Two Oceans 55 is a custom-designed catamaran developed by Yacht Design Cambridge Limited, renowned for their expertise in catamaran design. This vessel exemplifies bespoke craftsmanship, tailored extensively to the owner's specifications. Measuring 57 feet 7 inches in length overall with a beam of 25 feet and a draft of 3 feet 6 inches, the Two Oceans 55 offers a spacious and thoughtfully engineered platform ideal for long-distance cruising.

Exterior Design and Flybridge

The aft deck spans 24 feet 9 inches by 10 feet 5 inches, taking full advantage of the 25-foot beam. It features a wide-open design under a protective overhead six feet eight inches above the deck, allowing flexible furniture arrangements without built-in constraints. The deck includes opposing sofas with a central coffee table and ample cabinet storage. Boarding gates and stairs on both port and starboard sides provide access to hydraulic platforms capable of lifting 1,000 pounds. The exterior decking eschews teak in favor of painted non-skid surfaces for enhanced grip and durability, with molded stairs accented by teak on the initial steps. The flybridge serves as a large social and operational area, equipped with L-shaped and J-shaped seating arrangements, a wet bar with Corian countertops, a grilling station, and under-counter storage. The hardtop provides six feet five inches of headroom, and the open boat deck includes a tender crane with a 1,000-pound lift capacity. The helm station features dual 16-inch Cummins displays, an electrical system monitor linked to both alternators and solar panels, and a double-wide Stidd helm seat. Notably, the tempered glass windshield and removable railings enhance functionality and visibility. Forward of the flybridge, options include either an open deck with solar panels or a lounge area with a wedge-shaped headrest.

Interior Living Spaces

The salon and aft galley are accessed via a sliding door measuring four feet two inches, complemented by an additional glass bulkhead adding two feet four inches of space. The salon features a wrap-around sofa with a padded footstool and expansive low glass windows with manual shades, designed for durability over long voyages. The galley is accessible from both sides of a central island with Corian countertops featuring a waterfall effect. It includes a double basin stainless steel sink, induction cooktop, microwave, full-size refrigerator/freezer, ice maker, dishwasher, and ample storage. An automatic vent above the cooktop vents externally for safety and comfort. An electric lift TV integrated into the island can be viewed by raising it or sliding open cabinet doors. The entire aft deck to forward bulkhead area is a single-level design, enhancing accessibility. Forward on the starboard side, an L-shaped seating area surrounds a solid wood table on adjustable pedestals. Opposite this, a custom three-seat sofa replaces the standard wet bar, which typically includes refrigeration and serving amenities. Adjacent social zones include U-shaped seating around a fiberglass table with storage beneath, flanked by two sun pads measuring 47 by 80 inches, with stairs leading back to the aft deck.

Bow Deck and Storage

The bow deck features extensive storage compartments on both sides, including rod holders on the starboard side. Two large storage areas provide substantial capacity for gear and equipment. Integrated seating is built into the bow rail, complemented by nine-inch cleats on both sides. The deck is designed with magnetic hatch handles to avoid trip hazards, reflecting thoughtful safety considerations.

Private Accommodations

The vessel offers flexible accommodation layouts, with this particular model configured with three staterooms and three heads. Options include a four-stateroom layout or an on-deck master suite. The starboard master stateroom is accessed via steps with 11-inch risers and includes a sliding door leading to a stacked washer and dryer with external venting. The berth is forward-facing with a hull-side window and opening port light, providing six feet nine inches of headroom and ample storage. The master head comprises a separate water closet with an electric flush toilet, vessel sink on Corian counters, hull-side window with port, climate control vents, and a main head featuring his and her sinks, storage, a vanity, and a walk-in shower. On the port side, the VIP stateroom forward includes a berth facing a hull-side window with an opening port light and six feet nine inches of headroom, extensive storage, and a hanging locker. The adjacent head offers a recessed sink in Corian countertops, electric flush toilet, walk-in shower, and hull-side window. The guest stateroom aft contains two side-by-side berths convertible into a large berth with six feet three inches of headroom and abundant storage. An additional head is located nearby. Throughout the accommodations, deck hatches utilize magnetic handles for ease of use and safety.

Power and Performance

The Two Oceans 55 is powered by twin Cummins 6.7-liter diesel engines, each producing 550 horsepower, paired with 25.98-inch five-blade propellers. The vessel’s displacement with 60% fuel and four people aboard was estimated at 53,522 pounds. During testing, the top speed reached 25.7 knots at 3,300 RPM, with the best cruise speed at 18.8 knots at 2,600 RPM consuming 30.8 gallons per hour, yielding a fuel efficiency of 0.6 nautical miles per gallon and a range of approximately 412 nautical miles with a 10% fuel reserve. At a reduced speed of 8.3 knots (1,500 RPM), fuel burn drops to 7.9 gallons per hour, extending the range to nearly 718 nautical miles. The catamaran hull provides excellent handling characteristics, slicing through offshore conditions with minimal spray and a dry ride. The vessel has a seven-turn lock-to-lock steering radius, suitable for cruising rather than tight maneuvering. The steering system includes a switch near the microphone hang-up point, which can inadvertently disable steering if not carefully managed. The engine rooms are accessed via aft deck hatches and include dual Racor filters, a 21.5 kW generator on the port side, and an underwater exhaust system with a bypass. The electrical system features large alternators and a power takeoff charging system that rapidly recharges batteries during engine operation. The vessel also incorporates a comprehensive drain system designed to prevent rust streaks, contributing to its ocean certification.

Conclusion

The Two Oceans 55 is a thoughtfully designed, highly customizable catamaran that excels as a long-range cruiser. Its spacious exterior and interior layouts, combined with robust power and efficient performance, make it well-suited for extended voyages. The vessel’s ocean certification and attention to detail in systems and safety features underscore its capability and reliability. While some owner-specific customizations may not align with all preferences, they highlight the manufacturer’s willingness to accommodate individual requirements. Overall, the Two Oceans 55 demonstrates a high level of design sophistication and practical functionality.
