The original SUV of the water, the True North 38 made by USWatercraft in Warren, RI, combines its signature Downeast looks with 25-knot performance and a unique use of space. The True North's sharp plumb bow parts the waves, its tumblehome suggests a lobster-boat heritage, and its long sheer line mirrors the classic appeal of Alerion sailboats that USWatercraft also makes. What further sets the True North apart is the spacious cockpit and transom doors that open so you can slide in a dinghy, a small sailboat or simply enjoy diving and watersports.
With the transom doors open, it's one level all the way forward to the companionway. The galley is up, to starboard, opposite two lounge seats facing a high-low table that can convert to an extra berth. Below, there's a V-berth and full head with shower. Up top, the cabin roof can hold a pair of kayaks or paddleboards. A single 480-hp Yanmar diesel produces a cruising speed of 21 knots and a top speed of 25 knots. I've tested True Norths off Newport and in Florida, and they are responsive, user-friendly cruising boats that are fun to drive.
Peter Janssen - Review September 2016
Charley is a very well cared for True North Heritage 38 Flybridge and is one of only two hulls that were built with a flybridge from the factory. She has had a lot of recent maintenance and upgrades that make her a standout among these boats. Whether you want to locally cruise her on the weekends or head offshore making longer trips she will get you there in comfort and style.
One of the distinguishing characteristics of the True North 38's is her expansive cockpit and reverse sheer transom. This gives her a graceful and striking profile. The large cockpit and wide stern access makes her versatile for use. The cockpit makes a great dive boat, dinghy storage point or just great social focal point on the boat.
Moving forward you have flybridge access on the starboard side and centerline a double, soft opening access door to the main salon.
The flybridge is well covered and comfortable with full controls and instruments to starboard and L shape seating to port. She has a small mast with instrumentation and rail mounted fishing pole rocket launchers.
Entering the mainsalon you have the galley to the starboard with stove, microwave, fridge and freezer and ample work surfaces surrounding a double stainless steel sink. Immediately to the port upon entry is the icemaker followed by the dinette that expands to accommodate up to 6 or converts to a berth.
Moving forward staying on the starboard side you have a double bench seat with footrest and great views forward to keep the captain company while underway. Opposite is the helms seat that is plush with ergonomically laid out controls and electronics at your fingertips. The view forward is unobstructed through the three panel windshield with center panel opening and all cleared with windshield wipers in inclement weather.
Slightly to starboard of center is access to the stateroom with a lockable door. There is ample storage for long times aboard. To starboard is the oversize head with separate shower. Forward is the large v-berth for comforetable nights aboard. The cabin is well ventilated with opening ports and hatch and supplemented with 12 volt fans.
In summary, she is a thoughtfully laid out coastal cruising boat that will get you there in style and comfort.
