Trophy 1903: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Overview

The 2004 Trophy 1903 center console is a highly regarded fishing boat designed to meet the needs of serious anglers. Measuring 19 feet in length with a wide 8 foot 2 inch beam, it offers spaciousness comparable to larger boats. Its deep V-hull design enhances ride quality, providing stability and smooth handling even in choppy conditions. Equipped with practical fishing features and ample storage, this boat is rigged and ready for offshore excursions.

Fishing Features and Deck Layout

This center console is thoughtfully outfitted for fishing convenience. Under-gunnel rod storage keeps gear organized and accessible, while a centrally located live well is positioned close to the fishing action yet does not interfere with anglers' movement. The live well pump can be switched via a selector valve to function as a saltwater washdown system, a useful option available across Trophy fishing boats. The live well top doubles as a seat, complemented by tackle storage beneath the helm seat back and a tackle center below. The aft seat lifts to reveal access to pumps, batteries, through-hulls, and other essential equipment. The cockpit is uncluttered and easy to clean, featuring recessed cleats and minimal railings to prevent line snags. Additional deck conveniences include a bow fish box accessible without removing the removable bow cushion, an anchor well with rubber chocks, and dual integrated stern platforms with telescoping boarding ladders and handrails.

Helm and Console

The helm console is designed with functionality and comfort in mind. It provides ample space for flush-mounted electronics and includes a handrail around the windshield for safety in rough waters. On top of the console, a compass and drink holders add to the convenience. Switches and breakers are logically arranged, and the 3-in-1 gauges display RPM, fuel and volts, speed, engine temperature, and trim information. A dry storage compartment adjacent to the helm and additional storage in front of the console enhance organization. The leaning post seat supports both sitting and standing positions comfortably.

Performance and Handling

Powered by a 125 horsepower Mercury outboard engine, the Trophy 1903 delivers efficient performance. During testing, the boat cruised at 32.1 miles per hour at 4000 RPM, achieving fuel efficiency of over 3.5 miles per gallon. Even at wide-open throttle reaching 38 miles per hour, it maintained better than 3 miles per gallon. The 55-gallon fuel tank affords a range of approximately 177 miles, providing confidence for extended offshore trips. The hull’s 19-degree dead rise contributes to a smooth ride by cutting through chop effectively and enables tight, responsive turns. The boat draws 2 feet 8 inches with the motor down and only 1 foot 3 inches with the motor raised, facilitating access to shallow backwater fishing spots.
