Boattest.com Review

Overview

The Triton 20 TRX is a high-end bass boat designed for serious fishing enthusiasts, offering a comprehensive suite of features, impressive top speed, and excellent handling. This model is engineered to meet the demands of tournament anglers with a focus on functionality, comfort, and performance.

Fishing Features and Deck Layout

At the bow, the casting deck measures approximately 6 feet 4 inches wide by 5 feet fore and aft, covered with fatigue-reducing padded carpet to enhance comfort during long fishing sessions. The freeboard measures 18 inches at the bow and 12 inches at the stern, providing a stable platform. Our test boat was equipped with a Minn Kota trolling motor featuring I-Troll station keeping, operated via a foot pedal recessed in the deck. A Lowrance HDS-9 fish finder with a 9-inch screen is mounted at the bow. The starboard side houses switches for lights and outboard motor trim, along with a tool rack. Rod straps retract neatly into the gunwale, and the boat includes two portable fishing seats: a leaning-style seat in the bow with dual sockets to accommodate different angler heights, and a folding bucket-style seat aft.

Storage and Utility

Storage is thoughtfully designed with a lighted center locker featuring movable dividers to accommodate various tackle box sizes and a retractable rod butt end holder. The reinforced hatch is supported by dual gas struts and secured with a locking latch. Additional amenities include cup holders positioned to keep drinks out of direct sunlight and a 12-volt charging port. Dedicated rod storage on the port side holds rods up to 8 feet long, while the starboard locker measures nearly 4 feet by 1 foot 5 inches, extending 5 feet 8 inches deep and 22 inches wide internally, with a clip for securing the anchor light. Both hatches lock for security.

Console and Seating Arrangement

A hinged step between the consoles opens to reveal a fully insulated cooler. The port console, an optional feature on our test boat, includes a carpeted glove box and an additional storage compartment beneath the angled footrest. The port bucket seat offers wraparound backrest support, bolsters, and multiple upholstery textures, adjustable fore and aft. Adjacent to this seat is a rod ramp with soft rubber mat cushioning and a clip-down strap for secure rod storage. The driver’s seat mirrors the port seat in comfort and adjustability. The starboard console features an acrylic windscreen, with instrumentation including a speedometer integrated with a volt gauge, water pressure monitor, a 12-inch central display, tachometer, and fuel gauge. Controls such as livewell switches, a turn signal-style trim switch, accessory switches including master power, pop-out circuit breakers, a 12-volt plug, and horn are ergonomically arranged around the hydraulic steering wheel. The boat is equipped with a standard foot throttle, relegating the shift lever to gear engagement only. A 4-inch midship cleat is conveniently positioned for single-handed docking.

Aft Deck and Livewells

The aft fishing deck measures approximately 6 feet 6 inches by 5 feet, accessible via a rubber-covered step between the seats. Twin hatches open to reveal dual livewells, each equipped with two pumps, a separate exit pump, a timer, and a recirculating system, underscoring Triton’s emphasis on livewell functionality. Above the livewells are tackle storage compartments fitted with plastic tubs featuring slots for tackle boxes. The hatch accessing batteries and mechanical components is front-hinged to utilize onrushing air for secure closure at speed. Inside, removable trays provide access to three trolling motor batteries and a single cranking battery, alongside a battery switch and a four-bank charger. The transom features Triton’s signature bustle design, with a remote switch for the drain plug and battery charger plug located port side in the splash well. A boarding ladder is integrated into the transom’s port side.

Trailer and Launching Features

The TRX-20 is delivered on a tandem axle trailer, which on our test model included upgraded rims, wider tires, and diamond plate fenders. The step plate is illuminated, and the trailer features a practical swing-away tongue for easier maneuvering. Built-in straps and a spare tire are standard, facilitating convenient transport and launching.

Power and Performance

Triton offers the 20 TRX with either Evinrude or Mercury engines, with the Mercury option priced more affordably. Our test boat was powered by a Mercury 250 Pro XS 4-stroke outboard mounted on a standard 10-inch jack plate and fitted with a 14x24 Fury 3-blade stainless steel propeller. The boat measures 20 feet 5 inches in length and 7 feet 11 inches in beam, with an empty weight of 1,790 pounds. Our test weight, including two people, fuel, and equipment, was approximately 2,913 pounds. The engine reached a top speed of 73 miles per hour at 5,900 RPM. Optimal cruising speed was recorded at 34.7 miles per hour at 3,500 RPM, with a fuel consumption of 7.4 gallons per hour, yielding 4.7 miles per gallon and a range of 191 statute miles with a 10% fuel reserve from the 45-gallon tank. Acceleration was notable, with planing achieved in 3.4 seconds, 20 miles per hour reached in 5.1 seconds, and 30 miles per hour in 7.5 seconds. Deceleration was smooth, with no water washing over the transom.

Handling and Structural Design

The TRX-20 demonstrated excellent handling characteristics, maintaining straight-line stability and executing turns with ease and predictability. There was no chine-walking at top speeds, attributed in part to Triton’s dry chine design that enhances lift and spray deflection. The hull incorporates the ZeroFlex stringer system, featuring two full-length braces and seven transverse supports, complemented by a full-width composite transom. This robust construction contributes to the boat’s smooth ride and responsive handling.

Conclusion

The Triton 20 TRX combines thoughtful fishing features, comfortable and adjustable seating, ample storage, and advanced livewell systems with strong power and refined handling. Its structural integrity and design innovations make it a competitive choice for tournament anglers and serious bass fishermen. Overall, the TRX-20 meets the high standards expected in a premium bass boat, delivering performance and functionality that align with the needs of dedicated anglers.
