Tiara 5800 Sovran: BoatTEST Review
Overview
The Tierra 5800 Sovereign represents the largest yacht ever constructed by Tierra, purpose-built for high-end extended cruising. This model introduces a new standard of comfort and performance for enthusiasts seeking long-range voyages, featuring advanced triple IPS pod drives and expansive on-the-water living spaces. Its robust construction utilizes all-composite stringers and an end grain balsa core hull and deck, providing a solid foundation for blue-water journeys to distant ports.
Exterior Design and Deck Features
The yacht's exterior is highlighted by a 72-inch deep molded swim platform that leads to a spacious lazarette, offering ample storage for fenders, lines, and housing a remote-controlled davit for tenders or personal watercraft. The aft deck is designed for luxury and socializing, with a large settee and a high-gloss cockpit table comfortably seating six guests. Customizable molded-in storage units flank the aft deck, enhancing its versatility for entertaining. Despite accommodating triple Volvo IPS engines, the engine compartment is thoughtfully arranged to allow easy access for maintenance and service. Power needs away from the dock are met by a 17-kilowatt Onan generator. Tierra also plans a European variant featuring crew quarters positioned forward of the engines. Wide side decks with tall safety rails facilitate safe movement to the foredeck, where a molded pulpit and a forepeak hatch conceal ground tackle storage, windlass controls, and auxiliary power connections for bow docking.
Interior Living Spaces
Entering the salon through expansive sliding glass doors, guests are welcomed by exquisite teak joinery and flooring. The upper sitting area includes an L-shaped lounge and two club chairs, complemented by a concealed entertainment center equipped with a flat-screen LCD TV and a Denon surround sound stereo system. The helm features dual Tracy five-way adjustable electric command chairs, digital navigation and engine monitoring instruments, and Tierra's proprietary touchscreen display for controlling ship systems. The galley is strategically placed on its own level between the upper and lower salons, allowing the chef to engage with guests while preparing meals. It boasts a spacious quartz countertop with a dual sink and a three-burner electric cooktop. High-end appliances such as a microwave convection oven, drawer-type dishwasher, and a Sub-Zero refrigerator-freezer combo are installed below the work surface. The lower salon offers an elegant U-shaped dinette for four adults with a view of a 26-inch flat-screen TV; this seating area can convert into an additional berth if necessary. Adjacent to the lower salon is the dayhead, featuring tile flooring, a stone vanity top, a separate shower stall, and dual access from the salon and VIP stateroom.
Private Accommodations
The forward VIP stateroom is spacious and well-appointed, featuring a queen-size pedestal berth with an inner spring mattress, ample storage beneath the berth and in upper hull side cabinets, a 20-inch LCD TV, and a cedar hanging locker. The full-beam master stateroom amidships offers generous space and headroom, accommodating even tall individuals comfortably. Large hull-side windows provide natural light and water views. The master berth is an inner spring queen-size island style, flanked by multiple dresser drawers. The port side includes two cedar-lined hanging lockers and a comfortable sitting chair with access to the Denon stereo system. To starboard, a vanity area with a swing-out seat serves as a dressing or workspace, complemented by a 26-inch flat-screen TV. The stateroom foyer conceals a combination washer and dryer unit and includes a dedicated linen closet for additional storage.
Power and Performance
The Tierra 5800 Sovereign is powered by triple Volvo IPS diesel engines, delivering impressive performance on the water. Fuel efficiency measured just over half a mile per gallon, providing a total range of approximately 340 miles. The yacht measures 60 feet 9 inches in overall length from the bow pulpit to the aft swim platform, with a beam of 15 feet 10 inches, balancing size and performance for extended cruising.
