    Tiara 4300: BoatTEST Review

    Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

    Overview

The Sovereign 4000 Cruiser from Tierra Yachts represents one of the company's first vessels designed specifically around Volvo Penta's new inboard performance system (IPS). This innovative propulsion setup allowed the designers to relocate the engines aft, creating additional interior space and enhancing overall livability and performance. The vessel emphasizes comfort aboard and premium cruising capabilities, featuring quieter operation, reduced vibration, and lower emissions thanks to the IPS technology.

    Exterior Design and Deck Layout

At the stern, the Sovereign 4000 features a large bolt-on swim platform equipped with low-profile cleats and four built-in tie-downs suitable for securing a dinghy. A watertight storage trunk beneath the platform provides ample space for six to eight fenders and dock lines, complemented by a three-step swim ladder for easy water access. The cockpit is accessible via molded steps integrated into the wide gunwale or through a transom door. A standard hardtop extends well aft, offering protection from the elements, and incorporates hatches with built-in screens and sunshades that open easily with one hand. The engine compartment benefits from the compact IPS design, eliminating bulky transmissions and driveshafts, which simplifies maintenance and reduces noise and vibration.

    Bridge and Helm Station

Ascending one level reveals a raised lounge area providing a panoramic 360-degree view while underway. To starboard, a wet bar includes a cold water sink and refrigerator, enhancing onboard convenience. The helm station is designed for ergonomic efficiency, featuring a clean, uncluttered dashboard with state-of-the-art controls. Rocker switches have been relocated to the starboard side for improved accessibility, positioned just above the engine controls. The helm seat is fully adjustable and paired with a mahogany steering wheel, combining comfort with refined aesthetics.

    Interior Living Spaces

Below deck, the interior showcases a spacious salon adorned with teak finishes. The starboard side houses an L-shaped sofa with a high backrest capable of seating four comfortably around a removable teak dining table. Entertainment is provided by a 20-inch flat-screen TV with Bose surround sound. The adjacent galley is well-appointed with Corian countertops, dual stainless steel sinks, a two-burner electric cooktop, microwave, nearly full-size refrigerator, and ample upper and lower cabinetry, facilitating efficient meal preparation.

    Private Accommodations

A notable design innovation enabled by the IPS system is the addition of a guest stateroom beneath the bridge deck aft, featuring twin berths convertible to a queen with an optional filler cushion. This cabin includes a cedar-lined closet and a separate head with a dedicated shower stall, ensuring guest privacy and comfort. Forward, the master stateroom in the bow offers a queen berth with side access and overhead storage. It is equipped with individual air conditioning controls and a flat-screen TV. Storage needs are met with a cedar-lined closet and a large locker beneath the berth supported by gas-assist struts. The master head complements the stateroom with an enclosed fiberglass shower, Avanite vanity countertop with a glass vessel sink, vacu-flush toilet, and dedicated air conditioning vent.

    Power and Performance

The Sovereign 4000 measures 45 feet 3 inches in length with a beam of 14 feet 9 inches, a displacement of 26,800 pounds, and fuel and water capacities of 375 and 110 gallons respectively. Powered by twin Volvo 370 horsepower diesel engines paired with the IPS drives, the vessel achieves a top speed of 34.4 miles per hour at 3560 rpm. Optimal cruising occurs around 3000 rpm at 25.8 miles per hour, providing a range of approximately 320 miles. Noise levels remain low at 85 decibels during cruise, contributing to a comfortable onboard environment. The IPS drives, with forward-facing propellers that pivot like stern drives, afford the Sovereign 4000 agile handling characteristics, enabling tight turns and easy docking maneuvers. The boat handles more like a sport boat than a traditional cruiser, underscoring its performance-oriented design.

    Conclusion

The Tierra Sovereign 4000 Cruiser is a thoughtfully designed vessel that balances spacious, comfortable accommodations with advanced propulsion technology to deliver a refined cruising experience. Its innovative use of the Volvo Penta IPS system not only enhances performance and maneuverability but also creates additional interior space, notably a second stateroom with private head. With its combination of livability, efficient maintenance features, and sporty handling, the Sovereign 4000 is well-suited for long-term, long-range cruising and is positioned to be a strong contender in Tierra's 2006 lineup.
