Design and layout

The Tartan 41 was originally designed by Sparkman & Stephens (S&S) at the request of Charlie Britton, founder of Tartan Marine, Co., who was eager to produce a boat that could compete with the new Nautor Swan 43s. Both were designed by S&S.

Mame is a modified Tartan 41. These custom modifications are significant, most notably dealing with the undersized rudder and keel issues of the standard original design which led to steering and handling problems.

This Tartan was first owned by Steele Griswold (at the time the owner of Shelburne Shipyard, Vermont). He ordered the hull and deck unfinished from Tartan Marine, Fairport Harbor Ohio. This was delivered to the Shelburne Shipyard in 1974 where modifications to the exterior and interior were made to Griswold's specifications.

Most significantly Griswold, (an engineer by training and a Lockheed P-38 Lighting fighter pilot during WWII) hired S&S to oversee the modification of the hull and rudder. The original skeg and rudder were removed, and a new rudder designed to resemble the wing of a LP-38 Lighting was installed and about a foot further aft. The underbody was completely faired with a finer entry forward, and the keel was lengthened to over 7 feet draught. Two blocks of lead were also removed from the keel lighten the boat. Teak toerails were added. A teak cockpit was insatlled by the second owner.

The custom interior is finished in teak with teak slat ceilings. The interior layout retains main saloon, forward cabin, head, galley etc, yet the after cabin no longer exists replaced to be large stowage area accessed via a tight door. Mame sleeps 6 with 4 berths in the main saloon (including 2 pilot berths) and two berths in the forepeak. There is a large hanging closet and numerous storage areas and cubbies. The large navigation station is to Starboard opposite the galley . The galley to port has a stove, double stainless steel sink and large ice box. The enclosed head and shower is abaft the forepeak
