Sylvan 18: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Overview

The Sylvan 1800 Expedition stands as a flagship model in its series, offering a blend of performance, versatility, and thoughtful design features. This 18-foot, 1-inch vessel is designed to accommodate both family outings and serious fishing excursions, combining spacious deck areas with durable construction and practical amenities.

Exterior Design and Deck Features

The Expedition features a hull with five keels and a gull wing design, contributing to a smooth and stable ride. Its .125 gauge bottom ensures durability and longevity. The boat's exterior is enhanced with chrome accents, providing notable curb appeal. The bow area is adaptable, equipped with cushions for family comfort or easily converted to a fishing setup with a filler and casting chair. Storage solutions are abundant, including dry storage beneath the starboard cushions and a live well on the port side. The boat is pre-wired for an optional Minn Kota trolling motor, with a conveniently placed engine tilt switch adjacent to the connector. Pop-up cleats maintain clear gunnels for casting, and the raised dash paired with a windshield offers excellent protection for the helm.

Helm and Cockpit Layout

The helm station is designed for comfort and functionality, featuring a three-spoke steering wheel and ample legroom. The dashboard provides sufficient space for optional electronics such as a fish finder, with lighted rocker switches protected by push-button circuit breakers. A battery box is located under the helm behind a door, while the companion station includes a large glove box with a simulated brushed aluminum finish. Between the helm and companion seats lies a spacious five-rod locking box integrated into the floor. The port and starboard sides offer accessible under-gunnel storage lockers, even when the aft section is configured as a casting deck. The cockpit floor is covered with easy-to-clean vinyl beneath snap-in carpet, and seat bases are powder-coated top and bottom for enhanced durability.

Seating and Fishing Amenities

The convertible bench seat is straightforward to set up, providing a full bench for family use while maintaining access to port-side storage. When configured as a casting deck, the port side features a combined live well and bait well with separate lids for convenience. The addition of a casting chair allows for seated fishing without obstructing access to storage or the live well. Generous toe kick space beneath the gunnels offers anglers excellent leverage when handling fish from the cockpit.

Power and Performance

Powered by a Honda BF135 four-stroke engine, the Expedition benefits from dual overhead cams with 24 valves, enhancing valve lift and air intake for improved horsepower. The single-stage induction system optimizes air flow through the intake manifold, ensuring strong performance across all speeds. The engine is equipped with a 51-amp belt-driven on-demand alternator capable of delivering 30 amps at 1000 RPM and over 40 amps at 2000 RPM, sufficient to maintain battery charge and power onboard electronics. The boat weighs 1,250 pounds dry without the engine and measures 91 inches in beam with an interior depth of 25 inches. Performance testing recorded a top speed of 46.9 miles per hour at 6,200 RPM and a cruising speed of 27.4 miles per hour at 3,500 RPM, demonstrating a balance of speed and stability.

Conclusion

The Sylvan 1800 Expedition offers a well-rounded package with its stable hull design, spacious and versatile interior, and reliable powerplant. Its thoughtful storage solutions, convertible seating arrangements, and fishing amenities make it suitable for both family outings and dedicated fishing trips. The boat's durable construction and smooth performance underscore its appeal as a safe and enjoyable vessel for a variety of boating activities.
