Sun Tracker Party Barge 22 Sport Fish: BoatTEST Review
Overview
The SunTracker Party Barge 22 is a unique blend of sport fishing capabilities and pontoon boat comfort, designed to cater to both anglers and family recreational users. Built by a dedicated facility with experienced craftsmen, this model combines fishing features with ample space for family fun, making it a versatile choice for weekend activities on the water.
Exterior Design and Deck Features
The Party Barge 22 measures 24 feet 1 inch in length overall with a beam of 8 feet 6 inches, supported by 24-inch diameter pontoons. The boat weighs approximately 3,200 pounds and is equipped with a 45-gallon fuel tank, rated for a maximum horsepower of 135. Navigation lights are mounted on the deck adjacent to loop-style cleats, and a bow swim ladder is discreetly tucked under the front lip. Although convenient for large groups, the ladder can be somewhat difficult to manage from the deck. The boat features child-safe double locking gates with arched tops and curved edges, enhancing safety without harsh lines. The aft deck is well constructed, featuring a sun pad with a roll bolster for security, a port-side table, and a dedicated changing room. The stern gate opens to a swim platform with a flip-over scissor ladder, allowing easy water access despite the space taken by the 115 horsepower Mercury Optimax outboard.
Seating and Comfort
The Party Barge 22 offers plush seating designed for both fishing and relaxation. Instead of simple casting pedestals, anglers are seated in comfortable chairs with flip-up armrests and reclining backs, allowing adjustment to personal comfort preferences. These seats include Kicker high-performance speakers and stainless steel cup holders integrated into the restyled loungers. The Rotomotive seat bases provide ample storage space, capable of stowing long and bulky items, with cushions so heavily padded that the lids require a firm push to stay open. Additional floor-level drink holders enhance the lounging experience. Trash bins are cleverly concealed within the lounger end caps, which are lockable for security. The helm area features a low-profile tinted windshield that can be removed for storage, a molded console with a low-glare dash accented by burl wood, and a matching three-spoke steering wheel. A sunglass tray and twin drink holders are conveniently positioned near the wheel. The captain’s chair matches the comfort of the fishing chairs with reclining capabilities. Rear seating also offers excellent storage beneath the seats, with LED floor lighting discreetly mounted on metal tabs at the front of the seat bases. A rubber mat on the snack table prevents items from sliding, and the bimini top provides effective shade, setting up and stowing with ease.
Power and Performance
Powered by a 115 horsepower Mercury Optimax outboard, the Party Barge 22 demonstrates easy handling and respectable performance for a pontoon boat of its class. The boat cruises comfortably at around 3,500 RPM, delivering a range of approximately 132 miles. Acceleration to 30 miles per hour takes 14.2 seconds, with a top speed reaching 36 miles per hour. Despite the outboard occupying some space on the swim platform, the design maintains sufficient room for water entry and exit without feeling cramped.
Conclusion
The SunTracker Party Barge 22 successfully merges the sport fishing functionality typically absent in pontoon boats with the comfort and versatility expected from family-oriented vessels. From its comfortable and well-appointed fishing chairs to the practical aft deck with swim platform and changing room, this model offers a comprehensive package for anglers and leisure users alike. Its performance and thoughtful design elements make it a noteworthy option in the sport fish pontoon category.
