Stratos 294 XL: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Overview

The Stratos 294XL is a tournament-ready bass boat designed to offer both high performance and ample fishing space. Measuring 19 feet 6 inches in length overall with a beam width of 91 inches, this model weighs 1700 pounds without the engine and carries 36 gallons of fuel. It is rated for a maximum 200 horsepower outboard engine and is built to accommodate upgrades tailored to the angler's preferences.

Exterior Design and Deck Layout

The 294XL features a spacious bow deck that provides plenty of room for casting, whether using the optional casting bike seat or not. The Minn Kota Maxim 70SC 42-inch trolling motor is mounted high on the port gunnel, with a fixed footwell centrally located for foot control. Conveniently placed rocker switches control the anchor light and motor tilt at the bow. Recessed cleats maintain accessibility while remaining unobtrusive. Rod storage is well thought out, with retractable straps on either side of the bow to secure rods during transit, and ample storage lockers on both sides for navigation lights, clips, and other gear. The center locker is deep enough to hold a 5-gallon bucket upright. Additional features include a step with grip foot pads on the port side and an instep cooler on the starboard side.

Cockpit and Helm

The cockpit offers generous legroom for both the driver and passenger, with custom bucket seats designed for plush comfort. The fuel cell is mounted beneath the seats to enhance stability and performance. A center step-through provides easy access to the aft casting deck without stepping on the seats. Adjacent to the passenger seat is a running rod rack capable of holding up to four rods, complete with reel pads, a drink holder, a charger cord outlet, and a rod strap. The fiberglass helm is equipped with a low-profile quick-release windshield and hydraulic steering for responsive handling. The dash features a low-reflectivity finish with well-arranged Stratos Faria gauges for clear visibility. Standard electronics include a Lowrance X52 depth fish finder with a temperature sensor. Lighted rocker switches and a 12-volt connector for portable gear are grouped conveniently on the lower right side of the dash.

Aft Deck and Storage

The aft deck provides ample space for fishing activities and gear management. It includes matching dry storage boxes suitable for Plano boxes, life jackets, and other essentials. Dominating the center of the aft deck is a large 34-gallon divided aerated live well. Across the aft section, there is access to critical components such as the cranking battery, oil reservoir, pumps, trolling motor batteries, battery charger, and main circuit breakers, all organized for ease of maintenance.

Power and Performance

Powered by a 200 horsepower Yamaha HPDI outboard engine, the 294XL delivers impressive performance on the water. Testing on Bull Shoals Lake in Arkansas demonstrated a rapid acceleration, reaching 30 miles per hour in 4.6 seconds and achieving a top speed of 71.6 miles per hour at 5900 RPM. The boat accelerated from a standstill to planing in just 2.1 seconds. At a cruising speed of 47.3 miles per hour (4000 RPM), the 294XL has an estimated range of approximately 161 miles. The boat's handling was responsive and well-suited for tournament fishing conditions.

Conclusion

The Stratos 294XL combines thoughtful design, ample storage, and high-performance capabilities to meet the demands of tournament anglers. Its spacious layout, quality construction, and powerful Yamaha engine make it a versatile and reliable choice for serious bass fishermen. Whether outfitted with standard features or customized with upgrades, the 294XL offers a compelling balance of speed, comfort, and functionality on the water.
