Stingray 212SC: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Overview

The Stingray 212SC is the largest deck boat offered by Stingray, measuring 21 feet 11 inches in length overall with a beam of 8 feet 6 inches. Our test model was equipped with a new 200 horsepower Mercury V6 3.4 liter four-stroke outboard engine, the lightest in its class. With an estimated test weight of 3,866 pounds, including 75% fuel and two people aboard, this evaluation aimed to assess the boat's performance and handling characteristics compared to other deck boats in the market.

Power and Performance

Powered by the Mercury 200 horsepower 3.4 liter V6 four-stroke outboard, the Stingray 212SC demonstrated strong performance metrics. The engine turned a 14 by 19 inertia stainless steel propeller, enabling a top speed of 53.2 miles per hour at 5,840 RPM. Typical cruising speeds around 4,000 RPM yielded 35.3 miles per hour with a fuel efficiency of 4.4 miles per gallon. The most economical cruise was found at 3,000 RPM and 23 miles per hour, burning 4.4 gallons per hour and achieving 5.3 miles per gallon, resulting in a range of approximately 271 statute miles. Acceleration was brisk, with a time to plane of 3.5 seconds, 0 to 20 miles per hour in 4.2 seconds, and 0 to 30 miles per hour in 6.3 seconds. The boat exhibited good reserve power, particularly in mid-range RPMs, allowing for strong acceleration when needed. Handling was stable and well-mannered, with a dry ride and predictable lean in turns. Minor prop ventilation and chine walk were noted during hard turns but were easily mitigated by easing off the throttle. Trim adjustments around half trim optimized running attitude and spray control. Overall, the 200 horsepower engine was not excessive for this boat, providing confident performance without compromising controllability.

Exterior Design and Deck Layout

The stern features a large swim platform flanking the outboard, balancing deck space for water sports and engine accommodation. The Mercury outboard includes a convenient top cowling service door revealing maintenance points such as the oil filter, fuse box, dipstick, and fill cap, along with service interval decals. A lift and carry handle is integrated for ease of engine removal. Access from the swim platform to the cockpit is facilitated by a 19-inch-wide pass-through with two steps measuring 6 and 7 inches. The boat has a rated capacity of 12 people or 2,600 pounds. The cockpit includes L-shaped seating with padded bolsters and a pedestal receiver. The transom top is equipped with four beverage holders and a tow pylon receiver. Forward, the bow area offers wraparound seating with removable port seatback and padded bolsters. Storage is abundant beneath seats, including an insulated 45-quart cooler under the center cushion that can be converted to a live well. A hatch on the bow conceals a folding beach boarding ladder and anchor locker, complemented by a pull-up shower to port for rinsing off. Filler cushions convert the bow into a spacious sun pad, and a pedestal table receiver is installed both in the bow and cockpit.

Helm and Cockpit Features

The helm station is designed for comfort and control, featuring a bucket-style seat with a flip-up bolster and a ventilated back cutout. The cockpit depth at the helm measures 28 inches. A curved, tinted acrylic windscreen and a vinyl brow top the helm dash. Instrumentation consists of analog gauges including engine trim, speedometer with integrated fuel gauge, tachometer with voltmeter, and a blank gauge space. Connectivity options include a smartphone port and a 12-volt power outlet. The Bluetooth-enabled stereo system enhances onboard entertainment. Controls include a tilt steering wheel, rocker switches for ship systems, and a digital throttle and shift lever linked to the Mercury outboard's electronically controlled throttle body. A Simrad helm display integrates Mercury VesselView functionality, providing detailed data on fuel consumption, speed, engine parameters, and customizable screen layouts. Advanced features include Active Trim, Smart Tow profiles for water sports, Troll Control for fishing, and Cruise Control to maintain set speeds. Opposite the helm, a console houses a sink, wastebasket, fire extinguisher storage, and lockers that double as safe boarding steps. The helm console also features a two-piece door that can serve as a changing room or accommodate a portable toilet, with dedicated storage for a pedestal table.
