    Smoker Craft 172: BoatTEST Review

    Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

    Overview

The SmokerCraft Ultima 172 DC is a versatile dual-purpose boat designed to meet the needs of both avid anglers and families seeking recreational water activities. Established in 1961, SmokerCraft is a family-owned company known for producing quality boats with a focus on craftsmanship. The Ultima 172 DC transforms seamlessly from a dedicated fishing vessel, equipped with casting platforms at the bow and stern, into a family-friendly boat suitable for tubing, water skiing, or cruising to a favorite beach for a picnic.

    Exterior Design and Deck Features

Measuring 17 feet 2 inches in length with a beam of 91 inches and a fuel capacity of 24 gallons, the Ultima 172 offers a spacious and functional layout. The boat features multiple storage lockers, including lighted rod lockers under the gunwales and additional compartments beneath transom seats. The forward casting platform includes a 12-gallon live well conveniently positioned at the angler’s feet, while the aft section houses a 23-gallon bait well. Deck surfaces are finished with an aggressive non-slip material for safety, and four 6-inch pop-up cleats recess flush into the deck when not in use. The walk-through windshield facilitates easy movement between the main cockpit and foredeck. Seating arrangements are flexible, allowing quick conversion between family cruising and fishing configurations, aided by removable cushions, fold-down seats, and fishing chair mounts. Beverage holders are strategically placed for convenience.

    Helm and Controls

The helm console is thoughtfully equipped with essential instrumentation including a tachometer, speedometer, voltmeter, fuel gauge, and a lighted compass, all standard. The adjustable steering wheel enhances skipper comfort during extended outings. Audio controls and speakers are integrated beneath the consoles to protect them from weather exposure. Battery access is located beneath the helm, with a dedicated inlet for battery charger cords on the inboard side. The port console features a large glove box and additional storage, while an under-deck locker between the helm and companion seats provides further space for gear.

    Power and Performance

Our test boat was powered by Honda’s BF90, a 90 horsepower 4-stroke outboard engine known for its fuel efficiency and smooth operation. The engine utilizes a 4-4 induction system that shortens the air path in the combustion chamber, resulting in quiet running and excellent throttle response. Its single overhead cam 3-valve design maximizes torque and power. Maintenance is simplified with features such as a freshwater flush port, a 4-front corrosion protection system, and top-mounted electronics to safeguard critical components. Performance testing revealed a quick planing time of 3.1 seconds and acceleration to 30 miles per hour in 7.9 seconds. The optimal cruising speed was 25.3 miles per hour at 4,000 RPM, providing a range of approximately 152 statute miles. At wide open throttle, the boat reached a top speed of 44.0 miles per hour at 6,200 RPM. The Ultima 172 demonstrated nimble handling and responsiveness, making it a well-matched combination of boat and motor.

    Conclusion

The SmokerCraft Ultima 172 DC offers a compelling solution for boaters seeking a vessel that balances serious fishing capabilities with family-friendly recreational use. Its thoughtful design, flexible seating and storage configurations, and reliable Honda powerplant create a boat that can adapt quickly to different activities without compromising performance or comfort. Whether fishing on Lake Lanier or enjoying water sports with family, the Ultima 172 stands out as a versatile and well-crafted option.
