Smoker Craft 16: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Overview

The SmokerCraft 162 ProMag is a 16-foot dual console boat featuring a hydro lift hull design that is uncommon in vessels of this size. This design enhances performance by improving acceleration, control, and bow stability. The 162 ProMag is distinguished from the single console 161 model by its dual console configuration, offering versatility for both family use and fishing activities.

Exterior Design and Deck Features

The 162 ProMag incorporates SmokerCraft's hydro lift hull with a reverse chine design, which contributes to better bow down stability and improved hull shot performance. The hull is reinforced with an advanced integrated rib system, providing superior strength and rigidity compared to typical double-plated systems. At the bow, the boat is equipped with a Minn Kota PowerDrive V2 trolling motor mounted on the port side, complete with a tethered foot control that connects to a standard trolling motor plug. The anchor storage box is spacious and well-aligned for ease of use, with a bow light conveniently clipped to the lid. The bow deck allows for flexible use, either outfitted with chairs for comfortable casting or left open for quick maneuvering when a fish strikes. Additional features include a push-button deck light and a dedicated cover for passing through a battery charger plug to maintain trolling motor battery charge. A divided live well is also located at the front for fishing convenience.

Cockpit and Helm Station

The cockpit features a full-frame windshield with a walk-through design, although it lacks a lower air dam, which might affect comfort on cooler mornings. The companion station includes a molded-in drink holder and a large dry storage glove box. The trolling motor battery is housed in a central compartment. The helm is equipped with a vinyl-coated fixed position steering wheel, standard gauges for fuel, speed, and tachometer, and space for two additional gauges. There is also room for a fish finder, such as the Lowrance X-52, adjacent to the wheel. The rocker switches are backlit for visibility in low light conditions. The boat offers ample toe kick space under the side panels to enhance stability when handling active fish. Storage options include a rod locker on the port side and open storage on the starboard side, with a designated spot for a casting seat at the stern. The transom features port and starboard storage boxes with locking lids, a large engine splash well, and access to the cranking battery and a half live well with a Flow-Rite system.

Power and Performance

Powered by Honda's 90 horsepower four-cylinder engine, the 162 ProMag benefits from advanced technologies such as lean burn and blast technology, which deliver strong low-speed torque, rapid hole shots, quick planing times, and excellent fuel efficiency. The engine shares its design with Honda's Fit automobile engine and includes a 44-amp alternator that provides 35 amps to maintain battery power for trolling and live wells. Air induction channels optimize torque by metering air and fuel through the four-cylinder injection system. Maintenance is simplified with a spin-on oil filter and easily accessible components including the black box electronics, fuse block, starter, and oil dipstick. The engine also features a convenient built-in tilt switch located on the side of the motor, allowing for easy adjustment without returning to the helm.

Dimensions and Handling

The SmokerCraft 162 ProMag measures 16 feet 5 inches in overall length with a beam width of 86 inches. The dry weight of the boat without the engine is approximately 960 pounds. During testing on a windy inland lake, the boat demonstrated easy handling characteristics, executing moderate turns without cavitation or blowout while maintaining excellent visibility during hole shots. Performance metrics include a planing time of 2.7 seconds, acceleration to 30 miles per hour in 7.8 seconds, a maximum speed of 39 miles per hour at 6,000 RPM, and a cruise speed of 22.1 miles per hour at 4,000 RPM. At cruising speed, the boat offers a range of approximately 114 miles.

Conclusion

The SmokerCraft 162 ProMag combines family-friendly features with excellent fishability, making it a versatile choice for a variety of boating activities. Its hydro lift hull design and Honda BF90 engine contribute to strong performance and efficient operation. Overall, the 162 ProMag presents a well-rounded package for boaters seeking a compact yet capable dual console boat.
