Overview
The Sea Ray 21 SPX OB represents the first in a new series of affordable boats from Sea Ray, designed with versatility and customization in mind. This model is tailored primarily for water sports enthusiasts but offers options to convert into a fishing rig or add a tower. Despite its outboard configuration, the 21 SPX OB maintains the hallmark quality and attention to detail characteristic of Sea Ray, ensuring no corners are cut in its construction.
Exterior Design and Cockpit Layout
Upon boarding, the 21 SPX OB reveals a layout optimized for socializing and functionality. The boat features a tow pylon installed for water sports, with additional packages available to enhance its capabilities. The swim platform remains spacious despite the outboard motor, complemented by a four-step reboarding ladder located to port. The sun pad converts easily into an aft-facing seat, and beneath it lies ample storage. The walkthrough to the cockpit houses the battery and further storage compartments, including one integrated into the step. The cockpit seating is arranged with an L-shaped bench at the stern and a chaise lounge to port. The seating is highly adaptable: moving the aft seat back creates a forward-facing seat at the console, and adding a filler cushion transforms this area into an aft-facing lounge. Storage solutions are abundant, including a dedicated space for a 25-quart carry-on cooler, a built-in self-draining cooler under the aft seat, and a roomy port console compartment accessed via a side-mounted door. Additional storage includes a lockable glove box with a stereo system and an index storage compartment between the consoles, which features a gas-strut-assisted hatch. At the bow, side lounges flank an aft-facing seat that doubles as an observer seat for towing activities. Under-seat storage is tight but sufficient, and the anchor is stowed beneath the forward cushion, which also conceals steps leading to the bow’s non-skid deck. The boat’s beam is the widest in its class, and the narrowed gunnels contribute to a roomy yet social cockpit environment.
Helm and Controls
The helm station is designed with simplicity and ergonomics in mind. The gauge cluster is minimalistic, mounted on a contrasting panel for clear visibility. A depth gauge is positioned to the right of the helm, while toggle switches flank both sides, and a red push button for the horn is located to the left. The steering wheel is a urethane raft design mounted on a tilt base, enhancing comfort and control. Engine controls feature an armrest for added comfort during operation. The helm seat is pedestal-mounted, allowing fore and aft sliding as well as swiveling to engage with passengers in the aft seating area. A molded footrest is incorporated to improve operator comfort during extended periods at the helm.
Power and Performance
The test boat was equipped with a Mercury 150 four-stroke outboard engine, with optional power available up to a 200-horsepower Verado. With a full fuel load and three people aboard, the 21 SPX OB achieved a top speed of 46.5 miles per hour, consuming fuel at a rate of 14.5 gallons per hour, which translates to approximately two and a half hours of operation at full throttle. The most economical cruise speed was recorded at 27.4 miles per hour, burning 5.5 gallons per hour, yielding a range of 181 miles and an endurance of six hours and 36 minutes while maintaining a 10% fuel reserve. Although primarily designed for protected waters, the boat was tested in open water with moderate chop. At full throttle, some pounding was noted, but reducing speed resulted in a comfortable ride. The boat handled best when running on the beam or following seas, with minimal spray reaching the windshield. Turns were smooth and well-coordinated, with no chine walk even in choppy conditions. Acceleration was smooth and gradual, with the bow rising without obstructing forward visibility. The most challenging ride conditions were experienced in the head sea, but even then, the boat remained enjoyable to operate. Overall, the 21 SPX OB demonstrated excellent drivability and versatility.
Conclusion
The Sea Ray 21 SPX OB offers a compelling combination of versatility, spaciousness, and performance in an affordable package. Its customizable features, thoughtful storage solutions, and comfortable seating arrangements make it suitable for a variety of recreational boating activities, especially water sports. The helm is user-friendly, and the boat’s handling characteristics inspire confidence even in less-than-ideal conditions. Additionally, the availability of a stern drive version adds to its appeal. Overall, the 21 SPX OB is a well-rounded boat that delivers on Sea Ray’s reputation for quality and functionality.
