Sea Ray 400: BoatTEST Review

Boat Test Review on BoatTest.com

Overview

The Sea Ray 400 Fly is a two-stateroom yacht designed to offer a blend of luxury, entertainment, and practical functionality. Available with either one or two heads, this model introduces a new concept that combines the advantages of Sea Ray's coupe models with enhanced visibility and expanded entertainment spaces provided by the flybridge.

Exterior Design and Entertainment Areas

The yacht's primary boarding point is the swim platform, which extends 5 feet 10 inches from the transom. A hydraulically lowering section measuring 3 feet 8 inches serves as a tender lodge or private beach. Just forward of the platform is a grilling station featuring a single basin sink and a grill embedded into a Korean countertop, complemented by a stainless steel grab rail and storage beneath. This grilling area requires either the extended platform or the hydraulic version to provide sufficient standing room. The cockpit is accessed via portside stairs and includes an L-shaped seating arrangement wrapping around a pedestal table to starboard. To port, storage compartments can accommodate an ice maker or refrigerator, while two carry-on coolers are conveniently stored under the seats for easy access without removing cushions. The cockpit deck is finished with non-skid material as standard, with optional snap-in carpet available. Overhead protection is provided by the extended flybridge deck. Lighting for the cockpit steps and flybridge gathering area is controlled by a switch located at the cockpit entry.

Flybridge Features

The flybridge offers a U-shaped seating area to starboard surrounding an expandable pedestal table, with a helm seat that swivels to join guests. Forward seating includes a bench with a flip-back feature allowing for forward-facing positions. Opposite the helm is an entertainment center equipped with a sink, food preparation counter space, and a refrigerator below; an electric grill is also available as an option. A full-coverage bimini top shelters the entire gathering area, with an option to upgrade to a hardtop featuring a retractable shade. The lower flybridge steps serve dual purposes, providing access to the side decks and facilitating boarding from a fixed pier via a cap rail. The side decks themselves are 14 inches wide, protected by 25-inch high side rails and an additional cabin-side rail to ensure safe passage forward. At the bow, a multi-position sun pad offers a relaxing space, enhanced optionally by an audio system and a sunshade designed for all-day comfort.

Interior Living Spaces

The salon is accessible through a door that can open either as a single or double wide, with a flush threshold that creates a seamless transition from the cockpit. Inside, an L-shaped lounge to starboard and a second sofa to port provide seating for up to eight guests, with an optional pull-out bed available. Large windows afford panoramic views of the horizon from seated positions. Storage is integrated beneath all seating areas. Entertainment amenities include a corner-mounted 32-inch flat screen TV and a stereo/DVD system. The interior showcases high-quality materials and first-rate joinery. Climate control is managed by a 27,000 BTU air conditioning unit housed within cabinetry.

Galley

Located on the main deck for convenient service to guests, the galley features a covered single-basin sink recessed into a solid surface countertop. It is equipped with bottle storage, a two-burner stove positioned above a microwave, and a dual-voltage refrigerator. An exhaust vent is situated adjacent to the stove, and an optional sliding window can be added to provide natural ventilation. Additional storage is available alongside the galley workspace.

Private Accommodations

Below deck, the guest stateroom accommodates two sleepers in separate berths that can slide together to form a larger bed, suitable for couples or siblings. While a standard settee can sleep a third guest, this particular model includes an optional cabinet for extra storage instead. The guest head features a separate walk-in shower enclosed by a curved acrylic surround, a vacuum flush toilet, mirrored vanity, medicine cabinet, and Sea Ray towels, with simulated teak tile flooring. The master stateroom is located forward and includes a queen island berth accessible from both sides. Large hull-side windows allow abundant natural light, complemented by an overhead hatch positioned above the berth for stargazing. The optional private head includes a curved acrylic door enclosing a walk-in shower, an opening port light for ventilation, and matching wood cabinetry consistent with the rest of the yacht. The standard layout replaces the head with a storage system and vanity.

Conclusion

The Sea Ray 400 Fly represents a thoughtfully designed yacht that successfully integrates the coupe model's strengths with enhanced visibility and expanded entertainment capabilities offered by the flybridge. Its luxurious appointments, versatile living spaces, and practical features make it a compelling choice for those seeking a well-rounded cruising yacht.
