Sea Ray 31: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Overview

The C-Ray SLX310 is a premium model from C-Ray, blending luxury features with advanced technology. This boat is designed to offer both comfort and performance, making it suitable for a variety of recreational boating activities. Our evaluation includes a detailed inspection of its features and a comprehensive performance test.

Exterior Design and Deck Features

The SLX310 features a well-thought-out exterior with a spacious layout. The swim platform area provides 1 foot 1 inch of decking between the outboard well and the transom, creating ample space between the two swim platforms, which measure 4 feet fore and aft. The decking is covered with soft C-Deck non-skid material to enhance traction. Multiple water access points include a fold-out swim step equipped with a sensor for operator alert, ideal for diving or towing sports, and a traditional reboarding ladder certified by the NMMA for safety standards. The sun pad measures 3 feet 2 inches by 5 feet 4 inches and includes a five-position adjustable backrest, storage with built-in dividers beneath, and convenient cup holders integrated into the armrests. Stereo controls and a 12-volt charging station are embedded in the port armrest. The walkthrough from the swim platform rises by a 10-inch step featuring a hatch for wet gear storage and a freshwater shower. The hull houses 12-volt DC switches, a 110-volt battery charger, and a boarding step. The power tower, constructed from aluminum, serves as a high tow point for wakeboarders and supports an electrically actuated bimini shade that lowers 1 foot 8 inches without obstructing the driver's view. A hardtop option is also available.

Cockpit and Helm Station

The cockpit is designed for socializing and functionality, featuring L-shaped seating around a standard table that comfortably accommodates six guests. Upholstery in an earth-tone mocha color is enhanced with diamond stitching for a refined appearance. Storage is abundant, including under-seat compartments, a corner bolster storage area, and a glove box. The floor includes quick-dry pull-out mats and drainage for easy maintenance. The transom sun pad lifts hydraulically to reveal access to the battery pack and other mechanical components such as the engine steering pump and house batteries. A wet bar to starboard includes a sink, grill, storage cabinets, and a fridge/freezer compartment. Forward of the wet bar is an additional cozy seat. The helm station is equipped with dual 9-inch Simrad displays integrated with Mercury Digital Vessel View, offering chart plotting, depth sounding, water temperature, and fish finding capabilities. The helm features a tilt steering wheel, digital push-button start, and conveniently placed ignition keys outside the knee-strike zone. Controls include standard trim tabs, Mercury DTS spinnaker control, and optional joystick and active trim systems, which enhance handling and ease of operation. Visibility from the helm is excellent, aided by a windshield wiper and a low-glare dark vinyl dash insert. The helm seat and companion seat are upholstered with premium materials, include diamond stitching, and offer practical features such as flip-up bolsters, cup holders, grab handles, and swivel capability for the companion seat to engage with the cockpit area. Additional storage includes a closed cubby, an open tray with rubber mat, angled footrests, and an in-floor locker with a sliding drawer.

Private Accommodations and Head

The port console houses a well-appointed head compartment featuring a port light for ventilation, a stainless steel sink, a grab handle, and a vacuum flush toilet with a 20-gallon holding tank. The head is designed for convenience and comfort, complementing the boat’s overall luxurious feel.

Bow Seating and Storage

The bow area offers nearly a full circle of well-padded seating with a standard side-mounted table, with an option for a second table to starboard to accommodate larger gatherings. Two optional filler cushions can convert the seating into a large sun pad. The seats include padded armrests that fold up and down, grab rails, cup holders, and integrated speakers. Storage compartments are accessible beneath the seats, including a large compartment under the starboard seat that extends beneath the helm. The center seat cushion lifts to reveal a step and a hatch providing access to the anchor rode locker, which contains the windlass with remote operation, anchor sprayer, spotlight, and cleat. A beach boarding ladder can also be installed in this area.

Power and Performance

The SLX310 measures 33 feet 10 inches overall with a beam of 10 feet 2 inches and a dry weight of 10,335 pounds. Our test boat, with 50% fuel, two people, and gear, had an estimated test weight of 11,229 pounds. Powered by twin 300-horsepower Mercury Verado outboards, the boat achieved a top speed of 51.3 miles per hour at 5,500 RPM. The most efficient cruising speed was 35.8 miles per hour at 4,000 RPM, with a fuel consumption of 21.5 gallons per hour, yielding a range of approximately 237 statute miles while maintaining a 10% fuel reserve. The SLX310 planes quickly in 4.8 seconds and features SeaRay’s dynamic running surface triangular plates at the stern, which can be manually or automatically adjusted to optimize performance. The ride quality is solid and smooth, with a 21-degree deadrise that cushions impacts in choppy conditions. The boat’s high freeboard helps keep passengers dry, and it responds predictably during high-speed maneuvers. The joystick option greatly enhances precision during docking and low-speed handling.

Conclusion

The C-Ray SLX310 demonstrates a strong attention to detail, combining luxury, technology, and performance in a well-rounded package. Its user-friendly features, including advanced digital controls and thoughtful design elements, make it accessible to a wide range of boaters. The boat’s solid ride, responsive handling, and comprehensive amenities ensure it is well-equipped for enjoyable days on the water.
