Sea Ray 29: BoatTEST Review

Boat Test Review on BoatTest.com

Overview

The SeaRay 290 Sundeck is a spacious bow rider designed with family and guest comfort in mind. Its defining feature is the beam carried far forward to a squared-off bow, which significantly enhances the forward seating area’s roominess. This model emphasizes ample seating, versatile entertainment spaces, and thoughtful amenities, making it well suited for social gatherings and leisurely outings on the water.

Exterior Design and Cockpit Layout

The bow area features wide cushions that are each a seat and a half in width, complemented by well-padded armrests and angled stainless steel rails for improved usability. Recessed speakers are integrated into the bulwarks, and flip-down armrests enhance comfort and convenience. A walkthrough to the cockpit is angled to maximize seating space. The cockpit itself offers abundant seating, including an L-shaped lounge to port and a double-wide seat that works in tandem with the helm seat to starboard. Both helm and observer seats have flip seat backs that fold down to expand the cockpit seating area. At the stern, a four-across sun pad with liftable bottom cushions provides additional comfort, accompanied by drink holders and armrests on both sides. The swim platform extends well beyond the running surface, offering protection for swimmers and is finished with optional C-deck non-skid matting. An optional manual swim stair located centrally on the swim platform is designed for ease of use by both people and pets, featuring positive buoyancy for effortless stowage. Additional exterior features include a freshwater shower for rinsing off after swimming and dimmable courtesy lights under the seats to create ambiance after dark.

Entertainment and Amenities

Entertaining guests is facilitated by a refreshment center to starboard, which includes generous counter space for food preparation, a freshwater sink connected to a 20-gallon tank, and dual covers over an electric grill—though a single hinged cover would be preferable. Below the counter, a cockpit refrigerator and trash receptacle are conveniently located. An enclosed head compartment to port offers a sink with a pull-out sprayer, counter space, ample storage, a 12-volt light, an opening port for natural light and ventilation, a powered vent, and a vacu-flush toilet. The headroom inside the compartment measures 4 feet 3 inches, with 2 feet 9 inches of clearance over the seat, and the door design facilitates easy entry and exit.

Storage Solutions

Storage is abundant throughout the 290 Sundeck. Under-seat compartments are insulated, self-draining, and feature hinged cushions for easy access. Saddle storage adjacent to the helm includes a 12-volt accessory plug and a stereo shelf. Deep glove storage with drainage is located to port, while dedicated space for a 25-quart carry-on cooler is found beneath the port cockpit seating, though a raised lift would improve security. Two large in-deck storage compartments—one at the bow and another in the cockpit—are lockable, measure 36.5 inches long by 11 inches wide and 12 inches deep, and are equipped with gas struts and perimeter water drainage. Additional clever storage includes a flip-down shelf in the head compartment to organize gear, a long hatch under the port seat for skis or other lengthy items, and a self-draining in-deck wet storage compartment in the starboard walkthrough ideal for snorkeling equipment.

Fit, Finish, and Materials

The 290 Sundeck exhibits an upscale level of finish with a brushed chrome gel coat buffed to a mirror shine and hull trim that curves elegantly to match the rub rail. Cushions feature multiple tones and textures, enhanced by quilting, bead welting, and custom embroidery. The bulwark upholstery uses SeaRay’s recently introduced Espresso Ultra Vinyl, which combines a soft leather feel with enhanced durability against the elements. Stainless steel drink holders include drain hoses to prevent water accumulation. The head compartment counter is finished with a metal surface that has a distressed look, adding to the refined aesthetic. At the bow, a beveled windshield base with a latching mechanism effectively channels water away from seat backs, preserving comfort and dryness.

Additional Features

The test boat was equipped with a forward-rake tower constructed from powder-coated rails that is collapsible for easier storage. Above the tower, a drum-type bimini provides shade, although the tow point, positioned 6 feet 8 inches above the deck, would benefit from an additional mount below the bimini for easier access. The swim ladder is located to starboard, complementing the central manual swim stair. Courtesy lighting is dimmable, allowing for customizable ambiance. Optional side-mount pedestal tables can be added to both the bow and cockpit areas to enhance the boat’s entertainment capabilities.

Conclusion

The SeaRay 290 Sundeck impresses with its spacious layout, upscale finishes, and thoughtful amenities aimed at maximizing comfort and entertainment. Its design prioritizes roominess, convenience, and versatility, making it an excellent choice for family outings and social boating. The combination of ample seating, abundant storage, and well-integrated features results in a refined and user-friendly platform that stands out in the bow rider category.
