Overview

The Sea Ray 250 SLX is a new model that introduces the builder's innovative QuietRide feature, designed to significantly reduce onboard noise. This model combines advanced engineering with stylish design elements, offering both comfort and performance in a 26-foot package.

QuietRide Noise Reduction Technology

The QuietRide build process incorporates a proprietary tuned transom, acoustical insulation on bulkheads and liners, sound attenuation materials in the hull and liners, sprayed-in foam around substructures, and gasketing of various components to minimize vibration. Testing revealed a top speed noise level of 79 decibels at 47.9 miles per hour and 76 decibels at the best cruise speed of 28.9 miles per hour. Compared to previous versions of the 250 SLX and six other current models in its class, the QuietRide system reduces noise by 9 to 17 decibels at top speed and 6 to 13 decibels at cruise, validating Sea Ray's claim of a 25 to 50 percent noise reduction.

Exterior Design and Deck Layout

The 250 SLX features a refreshed exterior with a distinctive rub rail line, updated hull graphics, and an optional thin white aerodynamic sport arch that reduces wind resistance and weight while enhancing aesthetics. The bimini top is designed like an airplane wing, preventing flapping or rattling even at high speeds. The bow area is spacious enough for adults to relax comfortably, with integrated armrests and backrests, and includes an anchor locker. An optional filler cushion converts the bow seating into a sun pad. The cockpit is equipped with twin bucket seats that are notably wide and comfortable, featuring multiple-density foam, separate cushions, flip-up bolsters, swivel, and slide functions. A wraparound lounge aft provides additional seating, and the aft seat cushions can be removed to create a walkway to the swim platform, which is optionally finished with teak decking for a refined appearance.

Helm and Functional Features

The helm station includes a three-spoke leather-wrapped wheel and a thoughtfully designed switch panel with guards to prevent accidental activation. The Mercury DTS engine control offers a single start and stop button that maintains starter engagement until the engine runs. The instrument panel combines dark browns and tans to reduce glare. To port, a large console serves as an enclosed head compartment, equipped with a standard porta-potty. The walk-through to the bow can be closed off with a lower air dam. Behind the helm seat is a wet bar with a Corian countertop and storage designed to accommodate a carry-on cooler or an optional cockpit refrigerator. The deck is fully fiberglass-lined with additional storage beneath the sole.

Power and Performance

Our test boat was powered by the standard Mercury 300 horsepower 350 Mag engine. This setup achieved a top speed of 47.9 miles per hour while consuming 23.4 gallons per hour, resulting in a range of approximately 138 miles. At the best cruise speed of 28.9 miles per hour and 3,500 RPM, fuel consumption dropped to 9.1 gallons per hour, extending the range to 214 miles with a 10 percent reserve. These performance figures demonstrate that the standard engine is well-chosen for most users. However, for those planning to carry maximum loads and engage in water sports, the optional 380 horsepower 8.2-liter engine may be preferable. Handling characteristics include a 12-degree bow rise during acceleration, maintaining horizon visibility without aggressive trim adjustments. A slight trim adjustment brings the bow to a 5-degree cruise attitude, improving speed. The boat exhibited solid handling with a 16-degree lean into turns and no undesirable behaviors.

Conclusion

The Sea Ray 250 SLX combines innovative noise reduction technology with thoughtful design, comfortable accommodations, and strong performance. Its QuietRide system sets a new standard for noise levels in its class, while its styling and functional features enhance the boating experience. Powered by a capable 300 horsepower engine, it offers respectable speed, fuel efficiency, and handling, making it a well-rounded choice for a 26-foot sport boat.
