Sea Ray 25: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Overview

The SeaRay SDX-250 Outboard is a 27-foot, outboard-powered sun deck boat designed primarily for families and social gatherings. It serves as a companion model to the stern drive version, emphasizing spaciousness, versatility, and ease of use. With a beam of 8 feet 6 inches and a draft of 36 inches, this model balances ample onboard accommodations with strong performance characteristics.

Exterior Design and Deck Layout

Boarding the SDX-250 is facilitated via a SeaDek non-skid swim platform that cleverly maintains space while accommodating the outboard motor and providing sufficient buoyancy to prevent stern wave wash during deceleration. The swim platform also features a built-in insulated cooler with support struts and a concealed reboarding ladder on the starboard side. The cockpit seating extends approximately seven and a half feet forward along the port side, including beverage holders, USB connectivity, and an accessory plug. The aft lounger seat slides aft by 17 inches to expand cockpit space when underway, accessed through a 15-inch wide starboard walkway gate. Seating wraps across the back, along the port side, and partially on the starboard side, with integrated beverage holders and a pedestal table that mounts to a side bracket for added functionality. A port side flip seatback converts seating orientation, and a substantial 24-inch grab rail runs alongside the side window frame, enhancing safety and ergonomics. The upholstery features textured materials with custom embroidery, reflecting an elevated level of fit and finish. Additional storage includes two removable coolers, dedicated compartments for the cockpit table, and extensive in-deck storage with gas-assisted hatches. A bimini top provides overhead protection, and an optional arch includes an elevated tow point for water sports.

Interior and Amenities

The SDX-250 offers an expanded head compartment that extends from near the port side under the helm console to the starboard bulkhead and forward beneath the bow seating. This area includes ventilation and space for a five-foot-long berth suitable for children, with storage beneath steps and cushions. Access to the bow is through a 15-inch port walkthrough with an opening windshield that latches securely. The bow seating area features a three-across aft seat and a full-width forward seat, with beverage holders, speakers, USB connectivity, and charging ports. A five-inch bolster surrounds the seating for comfort, and the cockpit table can be relocated here. Filler cushions convert the bow seating into a sun pad. Safety is enhanced by grab rails measuring 31 inches to the cap rail and 34 inches to the top of the grab rail. The foredeck includes a hatch concealing a beach reboarding ladder over the anchor locker, and snaps for bow and cockpit covers extend protection to the windshield.

Helm and Electronics

The helm features a reversible seat back and a flip bolster for versatile seating positions. The dash is soft-touch and positioned seven inches below the windshield frame. The standard gauge panel is upgraded with a Simrad display offering preloaded chart plotting, sonar with transducer, and media connectivity. Buyers may choose between nine-inch or 12-inch displays, both equipped with VesselView Link for comprehensive engine diagnostics and readouts. The system includes towing modes with pre-programmed speeds and ramp settings, and users can customize display screens via drag-and-drop functionality. The helm also incorporates a faux-marble panel, beverage holders, a convenient central cubby, and a Fusion Apollo Series stereo system. Controls include a horn button, three electrical switches, USB connections, ignition, and a tilt-mounted steering wheel.

Power and Performance

Powered by a single 300-horsepower Mercruiser Verado outboard engine turning a 17-pitch Rev-4 propeller, the SDX-250 achieves a top speed of 46.9 miles per hour at 6,000 RPM. The boat's test weight was approximately 6,480 pounds, including 84% fuel and three passengers. Best cruise speed was recorded at 32.8 miles per hour at 4,500 RPM, yielding a fuel burn of 11.9 gallons per hour and an efficiency of 2.8 miles per gallon, translating to a range of 156 miles with a 10% fuel reserve from the 63-gallon tank. Acceleration to planing speed occurs in 4.3 seconds with minimal bow rise, reaching 20 miles per hour in 5.7 seconds and 30 miles per hour in 9.2 seconds. Handling is responsive and smooth, with a slight bow-up running attitude achieved by modest up-trim adjustments. The boat exhibits solid turn feel with a 17-degree roll and minimal chine walk, maintaining speed through turns with no prop ventilation even under aggressive maneuvers.

Conclusion

The SeaRay SDX-250 Outboard is a thoughtfully designed sun deck boat that effectively combines spacious seating, extensive storage, and versatile accommodations with strong performance and handling characteristics. Its outboard power configuration enhances storage capacity and ease of maintenance, while features such as dual coolers, convertible bow sun pads, an oversized head with sleeping accommodations, and advanced helm electronics make it well-suited for extended days on the water. Overall, the SDX-250 offers a compelling package for families and groups seeking a comfortable, capable, and user-friendly recreational boat.
