Boattest.com Review

Overview

The Sea Ray 240 Sundeck Outboard (OB) is a recently updated version of the popular 240 Sundeck, now featuring outboard power options. Sea Ray aims to distinguish this model by offering a premium build quality and superior performance in a small boat segment, rather than compromising on materials or equipment to meet a low price point. This review presents a comprehensive sea trial conducted by Captain Steve of BowTest.com.

Exterior Design and Power Configuration

The 240 Sundeck OB is designed around its outboard propulsion, with the stern featuring two swim platforms flanking an optional 300 horsepower Mercury Verado 4-stroke engine. Buyers can also choose between 200 and 250 horsepower Verado engines. The design incorporates practical elements such as steps around the engine well that serve as service platforms for routine engine checks and facilitate easy removal and installation of the engine cowl. The engine compartment is thoughtfully arranged with all components easily accessible and identifiable. Under the aft cockpit seat, a concealed compartment houses the batteries, battery switch, and steering pump. Forward of the cockpit, a cleverly designed compartment integrates both an anchor locker with anchor keepers and a B-tree boarding ladder, a combination not often found in this class.

Helm and Cockpit Features

The helm station features a plush bucket seat with wraparound support, adjustable by swiveling and sliding, and includes a thickly padded flip-up bolster for added comfort. The helm panel exhibits a tasteful multi-tone color scheme with light tan vinyl surrounding a white panel and a dark sunbrow overhead. Instrumentation includes a four-gauge layout highlighted by a SmartKraft gauge that consolidates selectable information to reduce clutter. A compass is mounted to the upper left of the helm. Two side panels finished in carbon fiber house lighted toggle switches. A storage cubby to the right is angled downward to prevent items from falling out during throttle advancement. The Digital Throttle and Shift (DTS) system features push buttons for neutral-only and automatic engine start/stop functions, with the ignition key positioned low in the storage compartment to avoid knee strikes. The entire cockpit is fiberglass lined with deck drains leading into the bilge for effective water management.

Performance and Handling

The 240 Sundeck OB measures 23 feet 10 inches in length overall, with a beam of 8 feet 6 inches and a draft of 3 feet 1 inch. The test boat weighed 4,679 pounds, including three quarters fuel and two people on board. Powered by a single 300 horsepower Mercury Verado four-stroke engine turning a 19-inch inertia propeller, the boat achieved a top speed of 58.9 miles per hour at 6,000 RPM, consuming 29.8 gallons per hour and providing a range of 98 miles. The most efficient cruise speed was 29.3 miles per hour at 3,500 RPM, with a fuel burn of 7.65 gallons per hour, extending the range to 189 miles and endurance to six and a half hours while maintaining a 10% fuel reserve. Acceleration was brisk, with a time to plane of 3.1 seconds and reaching 20, 30, 40, and 50 miles per hour in 5.1, 8, 10.1, and 14.1 seconds respectively. Upon acceleration, the boat exhibits a 10-degree bow rise, maintaining clear sight lines forward. Proper cruising attitude is achieved by trimming up to about one quarter on the gauge.

Handling Characteristics

The 240 Sundeck OB handles confidently, consistent with Sea Ray's reputation for solid performance. It maintains stability during turns without falling off the turn radius and exhibits minimal chine walk even during aggressive maneuvers. Speed tends to decrease steadily in hard turns but can be compensated by adding throttle. For aggressive maneuvers, it is advisable to bring the trim fully down; otherwise, the trim can remain in the cruise position, such as when towing. The digital throttle system provides instantaneous engine response, delivering brisk acceleration even from mid-range RPMs. When reducing power, the boat settles stern-first into the water. Notably, the boat is exceptionally quiet at cruise speed, with wind noise predominating and allowing for comfortable conversation in the cockpit.

Conclusion

Sea Ray's 240 Sundeck Outboard presents a refined and well-executed small boat option that combines aesthetic appeal, comfort, and strong performance. Its thoughtful design features, premium materials, and responsive handling distinguish it in its class. The integration of outboard power with practical and ergonomic details makes it a versatile and enjoyable vessel for recreational boating.
