Sea Ray 185 Sport: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Overview

The C-Ray 185 Sport is a versatile family boat measuring 19 feet 8 inches in length overall with a beam of 7 feet 3 inches. Weighing 2,600 pounds dry, it is easily trailerable by most family vehicles. The boat comes standard with a 135 horsepower MerCruiser 3.0 liter engine paired with an Alpha 1 stern drive, and it holds a total fuel capacity of 26 gallons. Optional power upgrades include either a 190 or 220 horsepower version of the MerCruiser 4.3 liter MPI engine.

Exterior Design and Deck Layout

The 185 Sport features an extra deep cockpit averaging just over 30 inches in height, enhancing safety and comfort for family use. The swim ladder is thoughtfully positioned on the starboard side of the extended swim platform, facilitating safer reboarding especially with the stern drive configuration. Six stainless steel cleats are strategically placed to accommodate various dock configurations, and all hardware throughout the boat is stainless steel, reflecting C-Ray's commitment to durability and quality. The sun pad opens in a gullwing fashion, allowing safe and convenient access to the engine compartment and storage areas on both port and starboard sides while on the water.

Helm and Instrumentation

The helm layout is designed for ease of use and visibility. Instruments are backlit with glass lenses and feature low-glare night lighting, displaying essential information such as fuel level, oil pressure, speed, tachometer, trim, and water temperature. These gauges are mounted within easy sight lines above the steering wheel and below a small sun visor. Switches are conveniently located to either side of the wheel, and the throttle is positioned to allow the operator to comfortably rest their arm during engine adjustments.

Bow Seating and Cover

At the bow, the 185 Sport offers a deep set seating area equipped with grab handles positioned just forward of each seat. The low profile of the seating facilitates easy installation of the snap-on cover, enhancing protection and convenience.

Performance and Fuel Economy

Testing over various iterations of the 185 Sport has shown that with the standard 135 horsepower engine, the boat achieves an average top speed of 39 miles per hour while consuming approximately 12.5 gallons of fuel per hour. At a more economical cruising speed of 20 miles per hour, fuel consumption drops to about 4.2 gallons per hour, providing a cruising range of approximately 116 statute miles.

Build Quality and Finish

While difficult to fully convey in a brief review, the overall fit and finish of the C-Ray 185 Sport exemplifies the high standards expected from this manufacturer. The quality of materials and attention to detail contribute to a durable and aesthetically pleasing vessel.

The Biggest Pros and Cons

The 2009 Sea Ray 185 Sport is a popular choice for those seeking a versatile and stylish bowrider. Here are some of the key pros and cons of this model:

Pros

Sporty Design: The sleek and modern design gives it an attractive look on the water, appealing to those who want a stylish boat.

Versatile Layout: The bowrider configuration provides ample seating both in the bow and cockpit, making it great for family outings and entertaining guests.

Performance: Equipped with a reliable engine, the 185 Sport offers solid performance for watersports like tubing and wakeboarding, as well as casual cruising.

Handling: The hull design allows for responsive and smooth handling, which is ideal for beginners and experienced boaters alike.

Storage: Despite its compact size, it offers a good amount of storage compartments for gear and personal items.

Affordability: As a used boat, it generally comes at a reasonable price point, offering good value for those looking for a quality sport boat.

Cons

Limited Cabin Space: Being a bowrider, it lacks overnight accommodations or a cabin, so it’s not suited for extended trips.

Seating Capacity: While comfortable, seating is limited compared to larger models, which might be restrictive for bigger groups.

Engine Options: The standard engine may not deliver as much power as some users expect for high-performance watersports.

Ride Comfort: In rougher waters, the smaller size can lead to a less smooth ride compared to larger boats with deeper V-hulls.

Aging Features: As a 2009 model, some of the onboard features and electronics might feel outdated compared to newer boats.

Made For

The 2009 Sea Ray 185 Sport is ideal for boating enthusiasts and families seeking a versatile and stylish bowrider. Perfect for day cruising, watersports, and relaxing on the water, it appeals to those who want a reliable, comfortable, and easy-to-handle boat that delivers excellent performance and ample seating for friends and family.
