Scarab 215 HO: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Overview

The Scarab 215 HO Impulse is a dynamic jet boat that combines performance and thoughtful design. Offered in three vibrant colors—laser red, sunburst orange, and a vivid green—the model features a 21-foot overall length and an 8-foot 4-inch beam. With a dry weight of 3,250 pounds and a test weight near 3,700 pounds including crew and gear, this boat is designed for both speed and maneuverability. Its hull incorporates a 20-degree dead rise at the transom and dual chines along the sides, promising engaging turning characteristics.

Exterior Design and Deck Features

The boat is delivered on a dual-axle trailer equipped with diamond plate steps, included as part of the package. At the stern, a spacious swim platform measuring 2 feet 8 inches wide provides easy water access, with wet storage located beneath it. The cockpit features wraparound U-shaped seating with a comfortable 3 feet 1 inch spacing between seats, and cushions are thoughtfully designed with raised forward edges and corner notches for enhanced comfort. The full-width aft-facing seats accommodate three passengers and have flip-backrests that allow use from the cockpit or create a walkthrough. Storage compartments are abundant throughout the deck, including a deep glove box and dedicated space for a carry-on cooler. The foredeck carries the beam well forward to a blunt bow, increasing interior space, and includes a hatch with anchor storage, an anchor keeper, and a reboarding ladder. Pull-up cleats are positioned on the sides, and a standard wakeboard tower with a bimini top provides a tow point 6 feet 5 inches above the deck and 6 feet 3 inches of overhead clearance.

Interior and Helm Layout

Inside the cockpit, the companion seat features a flip-up bolster and a wraparound backrest that allows leg movement without swiveling the seat. The helm is equipped with a plastic panel hosting toggle switches, a selectable multifunction gauge centrally located between dual tachometers, and a speedometer to the right. Ignition switches are positioned high to avoid knee strikes. Both the helm and companion seats include non-skid padded notches designed to hold cell phones securely. The aluminum-framed windshield offers seven inches of visibility above the instrument panel, and the steering wheel requires one and a half turns from lock to lock. Control buttons adjacent to the wheel enable selection among docking, cruise, and ski modes, with speed adjustments made via a forward toggle switch.

Power and Performance

The Scarab 215 HO Impulse is powered by twin supercharged and intercooled 3-cylinder Rotax 4-tech engines, each producing 200 horsepower. Engine access is facilitated by a hatch supported just under the hinges and held open by three centrally mounted gas struts, with comprehensive soundproofing applied around the engine compartment. Performance testing revealed a rapid 1.8-second time to plane, acceleration to 30 miles per hour in 5.7 seconds, and a top speed just under 55 miles per hour. At top speed, fuel consumption is approximately 35 gallons per hour, while the most economical cruise speed of 26.8 miles per hour at 5,000 RPM reduces fuel burn to eight gallons per hour, providing an endurance of four hours and 36 minutes. The boat’s handling is responsive, with the ability to perform tight turns and stop within a couple of boat lengths. The ski mode is recommended for towing to maintain consistent speeds, while docking mode reduces power for precise maneuvering.

Conclusion

The Scarab 215 HO Impulse impresses with its combination of vibrant styling, thoughtful ergonomics, and strong performance. Its twin-engine jet propulsion delivers quick acceleration and agile handling, while the well-designed seating and storage solutions enhance onboard comfort and convenience. The inclusion of a trailer and wakeboard tower further adds to its versatility. Overall, this model offers a compelling package for those seeking a spirited and functional jet boat experience.
