A challenge that any boat builder is faced with when trying to achieve the perfect balance of shallow running capabilities combined with a soft ride in choppy conditions is the proper deadrise angle for the hull's bottom. The necessary ingredient for floating shallow requires a flat bottom that won't drag along the bottom. By contrast, taming an unruly coastal chop requires the appropriate amount of deadrise or V-shape to part oncoming waves.
