It's difficult to add to the list of superlatives shared by the owners, crew, and all those fortunate enough to have spent time aboard a Santa Cruz 52, but Escargot, hull number one, is truly unique. Bill Lee drew and built the 52 as a more versatile successor to the legendary Santa Cruz 50. Over her life, this particular 52 has been on the continuous receiving end of upgrades and performance modifications, including a turbocharged Hall Spars custom carbon mast with a 15/16 fractional rig that stands seven feet taller than her original spar, and an extended carbon boom. Her asymmetrical spinnaker inventory can be flown either directly from her custom carbon bowsprit or squared back on her 25' carbon spinnaker pole. All rigging and performance modifications were made under the guidance of Scott Easum. Below the waterline, she's balanced by a bulb on a high-aspect stainless steel keel and a modern high-aspect carbon rudder designed by Alan Andrews. Her grid has been reinforced for increased strength and rigidity.
The SC52's design brief called for a fast, refined, racer-cruiser experience, and this is where Escargot is truly special among her sisterships. All powered winches can be controlled from multiple locations, including panels at the helm station, making her easy to sail solo or shorthanded in cruise mode by experienced hands. Hydraulic outhaul, vang, backstay, and traveler controls are also at the helm, and all halyards are led aft into Bill Lee's generous, ergonomically well thought out cockpit. A carbon salon table, floorboards, a removable/retractable bow thruster, a removable anchor windlass with a carbon opening cover, and a spare set of carbon standing rigging can all be installed or removed as needed, letting her shift easily between race and cruise configurations. It's all so easy it should come with a cup holder, and true to the "fast is fun" mantra, four are molded into her cockpit coaming to secure your beverages of choice.
From the owner
" Owning Escargot has been one of the greatest experiences of my life. The boat is incredibly well built with a laundry list of custom upgrades that make her the most enjoyable boat I've ever sailed. Fast is Fun! Her speed makes Puget Sound feel small. You can sail from Seattle to Sucia, Roche Harbor, or Victoria in 10-12 hours - under sail, in a headwind, or you can motor at 9 knots. She's very well set up to be able to sail single or double handed, with capacity above and below deck for extended cruising or fully crewed racing."
Interior Accommodation
All interior bulkheads and furniture are bonded directly to the hull. the joinery is both well executed, beautiful and integral to the designed load paths. Finished in lightweight fiddleback maple veneers, teak trim and a beautiful teak and holly cabin sole, Escargot's interior is modern and comfortable. Laminate counters and smooth fiberglass surfaces in the galley and heads make for easy to clean surfaces.
Starting forward, Escargot's forepeak is simple and comfortable at rest, and highly functional when configured in race or passage mode. A generous memory foam mattress v-berth provides a comfortable forward sleeping arrangement at anchor or at the dock. There is a large opening foredeck hatch above. Aft and to starboard, a pipe berth is stacked above and outboard of a work area, and in cruise mode, the work area is converted into a cushioned sea berth.
The forward head with separate shower stall is aft and to port of the forward v-berth. An electric head with macerator is located against the aft bulkhead facing forward. Outboard along the hull side is a long counter with a sliding door cabinet above. Additional storage and plumbing access is available below the sink in a large cabinet. An opening port and overhead hatch provide excellent ventilation. Immediately outboard of the head is a canvas pocket panel mounted to the bulkhead for small, personal crew gear. Forward of, and accessible through the head compartment is a separate shower stall that doubles as an excellent hanging locker.
Escargot's spacious main salon is just aft of the forward cabin. To port is a comfortable U-shaped dinette with pilot berth above and outboard. The dinette comfortably seats a number of guests around the teak table that can be lowered to form a double berth. In race mode, her wooden table can be replaced with a carbon table to save weight. To starboard is a straight settee with pilot berth above and outboard.
A traditional large nav station is aft and to starboard of the salon. Storage is available under the lift-top table, on a shelf outboard along the hull side and in four drawers forward and below. Above and outboard, the navigation instruments and electronics are neatly installed within arms reach. Aft of the nav station is a small bench which provides an excellent space to sit while putting on foul weather gear and sea boots. Additional storage is available below the seat and in a large locker outboard.
Aft of the salon to port is the well-conceived and highly functional J-shaped galley. Counters are surrounded by teak fiddles. Forward and inboard is a dedicated 'Bill Lee special' trash compartment with a laminate insert on the countertop and accessed via a locker on the inboard side of the galley counter. At the aft end of the counter is another locker with shelves. Outboard and forward facing is the double stainless sink with hot/cold pressure water and fresh and raw water foot pumps. There is a locker below the sink that provides storage and easy access to plumbing infrastructure. At the forward end of the counter along the hull side accesses the top loading refrigerator powered by a Frigo Matic Capri 50 compressor. Just aft is the Force 10 two-burner propane stove and oven. Aft of the stove is a small counter space with four drawers below, and behind is a stand-alone Norcold Tek II freezer. Outboard along the hull side, there is excellent storage available in a sliding door locker with shelves that runs the length of the counter.
The aft stateroom is located to starboard of the companionway aft of the nav station. The double quarter berth equipped with lee cloths provide excellent sea berths and a good guest privacy. A large locker forward and outboard provides excellent storage.
Directly astern of the galley is Escargot's garage space accessed from both galley and port cockpit lazarette, with an additional pipe berth, engine, hydraulic systems, steering quadrant, autopilot ram, and diesel heater access, as well as a rudder viewing window...fast is fun, but kelp is slow.

Deck and Hull
Lightweight and strong magic straight from Bill Lee's legendary chicken coop in Soquel, Escargot's hull and deck are hand-laid fiberglass and end-grain balsa core sandwich, bonded with vinylester resin and epoxy, laid up using vacuum bag technology that meets and exceeds ABS offshore strength requirements. A Kevlar collision mat and watertight bulkhead with lewmar opening access port reinforce the forward section for safety.
The deck is also hand-laid fiberglass laminate with balsa core on the cabin top and side decks and joined to the hull with an alloy T-track aft with a molded in toe rail forward, secured with 5/16" stainless flathead machine screws.
