Overview

The Sailfish 290 Center Console is a 30-foot, 6-inch offshore fishing boat designed to appeal to anglers and families alike. With a beam of 9 feet and a fuel capacity of 175 gallons, this model offers a balance of performance, stability, and comfort. Our test boat was equipped with twin Mercury Verado 300 horsepower outboard engines and an optional T-top, resulting in a total test weight of 9,541 pounds including fuel, two people, and minimal gear.

Power and Performance

Powered by twin Mercury Verado 300 horsepower outboards turning Mirage three-blade 15 1/4 by 19-inch propellers, the Sailfish 290 demonstrated impressive acceleration and speed. It reached plane in 4.1 seconds, 30 miles per hour in 5.8 seconds, and 40 miles per hour in 11.2 seconds, with a running angle of 5 degrees. The hull’s unique VDS design incorporates a keel pad and three deadrise angles—deep V, moderate V, and a flatter section—providing a smooth ride, fuel efficiency, and stability at rest. The top recorded speed was 58 miles per hour. Optimal cruising at 3,500 RPM yielded 26.8 miles per hour while consuming 14.7 gallons per hour, offering a range of 368 statute miles with a 10% fuel reserve. For water sports, a speed of 19.4 miles per hour was maintained at 11.3 gallons per hour. The boat handled well in choppy conditions, exhibiting easy steering, a comfortable ride, and a maximum lean of 12 degrees during hard turns.

Exterior Design and Deck Features

The Sailfish 290 features a high bow flare and substantial freeboard—47.5 inches at the bow and 36.5 inches at the stern—effectively keeping spray out and creating one of the deepest cockpits in its class. The large outboard engine well provides ample room for movement around the engines and includes a freshwater washdown bib. The deck layout is well thought out for fishing, with a 33-square-foot cockpit, a 35-gallon livewell integrated into a fish prep console behind the helm seats, and multiple rod holders, gunnel rod racks, fish boxes, and tackle storage drawers. The powder-coated T-top includes a curved rail for secure handholds and generous headroom. Additional features include a recessed powder-coated handrail, pull-up cleats, an optional fold-down navigation light, a through-the-stem anchor system with optional windlass, and a bi-fold door to the head compartment.

Helm and Seating

The helm console is spacious enough to accommodate two large navigation screens, with a tilting wheel and a well-positioned compass. It offers compartmentalized storage topped with a watertight acrylic cover and includes a 12-volt outlet. Optional helm and companion seats feature bolsters, movable armrests, and contoured cushions designed to keep occupants secure and comfortable. Forward of the helm is a 74-quart cooler that doubles as a seat. Additional seating options include fold-away transom seats, jump seats, removable seat backs for forward seating, and a side-mount pedestal table for the bow, many of which are available in comfort and entertainment packages.

Accommodations and Amenities

The boat includes a head compartment with a five-foot, eight-inch clearance, a drawer and sink, battery switches, and dedicated table storage. The transom gate opens inward for easy access, and a four-step swim ladder facilitates water entry and exit. Optional features such as a ski pylon, courtesy lights, and various fishing packages further enhance the boat’s versatility for both fishing and family use.
