Boat Test Review on BoatTest.com

Overview

The Robalo R317 is a versatile 31-foot dual console boat designed to accommodate spacious cruising for friends and family, serve as a capable fishing platform, and offer modest overnighting capabilities. The design emphasizes comfort and functionality, integrating innovative seating arrangements and ample storage to support a variety of recreational activities.

Exterior Design and Deck Layout

The R317 features a large, thoughtfully arranged deck with comfortable seating throughout. The bow area offers ample seating with flip-down armrests and a high-quality, self-draining Corian table equipped with stainless steel drink holders. The bow freeboard measures 4 feet 3 inches, contributing to deep interiors and wide bolsters that enhance comfort. The cockpit provides approximately 25 square feet of open deck space, accommodating crowds with dual L-shaped seats and a three-across bench seat that extends across the swim platform. Storage is abundant, including drawer compartments beneath seats and a large sole storage area. The stern has 40 inches of freeboard and 29-inch cockpit depths, ensuring security for passengers. Engine brackets eliminate the need for engine wells, expanding swim platform space, which extends 3 feet 4 inches on either side of the transom. Functional features include a four-step reboarding ladder, a freshwater shower wand, and a hull-side dive door that doubles as a boarding gate, designed to recess into the hull to save cockpit space.

Innovative Seating and Comfort Features

A standout feature of the R317 is the electrically actuated VistaView seating system, which offers five distinct configurations: forward and aft-facing bench seats, forward and aft-facing chaise lounges, and a fully flat sun pad measuring 7 feet by 4 feet 10 inches. The seat back can be adjusted and locked at any desired angle. Both helm and companion seats are 31 inches wide, featuring armrests at multiple heights and flip-up bolsters, with cutouts allowing occupants to face the cockpit crowd comfortably.

Interior Living and Overnight Accommodations

The R317 provides a modest cabin space measuring 6 feet 6 inches in length and tapering from 35 inches wide aft to 14 inches forward. While suitable for a couple to rest overnight, this area is more commonly utilized for additional storage, with options to replace the mattress with teak flooring for gear stowage. The cabin includes electronics boxes on both sides, secured with lift-and-lock latches and tension hinges. The head compartment is accessed via a door behind the forward-facing bow seat and offers 4 feet of overhead space with 3 feet of sitting headroom. It is equipped with an opening port light for ventilation, a stainless steel sink with a pull-out sprayer, Corian countertops, an electric flush porcelain toilet, and teak flooring.

Fishing Features and Equipment

The R317 is well-equipped for fishing, featuring a 25-gallon live well with adjustable aeration pressure, interior lighting, and a clear gasketed lid located in the port quarter. Integrated rod holders are positioned alongside drink holders, with additional rod holders along both sides of the cockpit and rod storage beneath the gunwales and inside the cabin. The high freeboard and deep cockpit bolster safety, complemented by tow rails. The dive door facilitates hauling large catches into the insulated, self-draining 4-foot 8-inch aft fish box. The hardtop is outfitted with spreader lights for night fishing and is pre-rigged for outriggers.

Helm and Electronics

The helm console is ergonomically designed with a soft-touch dash featuring a centrally mounted compass and an acrylic panel housing illuminated push-button switches. It accommodates a single large display, up to 16 inches, with stereo controls, ignition switches, and a tilt-mounted steering wheel positioned to the right. Additional controls include LEMCO trim tabs with LED indicators, Yamaha engine displays, an Optimus joystick, USB and MP3 connectivity, and digital engine shift controls. The helm seat matches the companion seat in width and comfort, and the helm area includes a sizable stainless steel framed windshield with a wiper. Navigation lights flank the hatch that conceals a Lumar windlass with a safety catch and polished stainless steel anchor. A cleat adjacent to the windlass secures the rode, and a manual windlass wrench is provided.

Additional Features and Systems

The boat includes a Clarion stereo system connected to an upgraded WetSound audio setup with six speakers, a subwoofer, and an overhead sound bar, complemented by two courtesy lights. An optional pedestal-mounted grill is available, positioned to avoid smoke accumulation under the hardtop. Six-inch pull-up cleats branded with the Robalo logo are positioned strategically. Battery switches are conveniently located near the swim platform boarding area. A mechanical room at the aft cockpit houses house and engine start batteries, steering and bilge pumps, and dual 130-gallon fuel tanks. Freshwater washdown is located at the aft bulkhead with accessible control switches.

Power and Performance

The Robalo R317 measures 31 feet in length, with a beam of 10 feet 6 inches and a draft of 21 inches. The boat’s empty weight is 9,050 pounds, with a test displacement of approximately 10,422 pounds including 60% fuel and three people aboard. Powered by twin Yamaha 300-horsepower four-stroke engines equipped with 19T 15.25-inch propellers, the R317 achieved a top speed of 55.4 miles per hour at 5,960 RPM. The optimal cruising speed was recorded at 30.6 miles per hour at 3,500 RPM, consuming 16.9 gallons per hour and yielding a fuel efficiency of 1.8 miles per gallon. This configuration provides a cruising range of approximately 422 statute miles while maintaining a 10% fuel reserve from the total 260-gallon capacity. Acceleration metrics include a time to plane of 4.2 seconds, 0 to 20 miles per hour in 5.9 seconds, and 0 to 30 miles per hour in 8.4 seconds.

Conclusion

The Robalo R317 dual console is a well-rounded boat that balances family cruising, water sports, entertaining, and fishing capabilities. Its innovative design elements, comfortable seating arrangements, extensive storage, and robust fishing features make it a versatile platform. Powered by reliable twin Yamaha engines, it delivers strong performance and efficient cruising range. Overall, the R317 offers a comprehensive package suitable for a variety of recreational boating activities.
