Robalo R250: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Overview

The Robalo R250 is a 25-foot, 3-inch center console boat designed to blend fishing functionality with family cruising amenities. It features a 9-foot, 2-inch beam and a shallow draft of 21 inches, making it versatile for various water conditions. The boat's lightest listed weight is 6,000 pounds, with an as-tested weight of 8,569 pounds including three people, full fuel, and test gear. Powered by twin Yamaha 150 horsepower outboards, the R250 offers a balance of performance and maneuverability.

Exterior Design and Cockpit Features

Starting at the stern, the Robalo R250 includes swim platforms on both sides, with the port side housing a pump-out and the starboard side featuring a shower. Access to the cockpit is via a one-foot-wide passageway with a 10-inch step down, secured by a gate. The cockpit deck is finished with non-skid surfaces and includes three-inch diameter drains in each aft corner. An inspection plate in the center provides access to fuel tank fittings. The transom is also non-skid with two stainless steel cup holders, and a fold-out bench seat with heavy-duty stainless steel hinges. A 30-gallon live well with aerated, rounded blue-painted corners is located in the port aft corner, with a tension-hinged lid. Mechanical components such as fuel water separators and bilge pumps are housed in the port-side mechanical room. The starboard side contains a Pro Sport Plus battery charger and a ladder for the hull side door, which opens on the port side and includes a magnetic catch to hold it open. Two insulated fish boxes with macerator pumps measure four feet long, 10 inches wide, and 10 inches deep. The cockpit offers expanded dimensions with 94 inches of width, 49 inches front to back, and 29 inches to the cap rail. Fishing features include rod racks with protective pads, multiple rod holders across the stern and leaning post, and bolsters running the length of the cockpit for angler security. Tow rails are integrated into the gunwales on each side.

Helm and Electronics

The helm station features a stainless steel tilt wheel with a spinner knob, flanked by two rows of illuminated accessory switches. Dual Simrad 12-inch displays provide navigation and system information, complemented by a compass that could be better aligned with the steering wheel. Additional amenities include a phone charger, two USB Type-C plugs, a 12-volt outlet, Lenco trim tab switches with position indicators, and a remote control for the Clarion stereo system. Below the displays is the Yamaha engine screen, with engine keys and controls positioned to the right. The helm seat accommodates two people, measuring 47 inches wide with individual flip-up bolsters and a two-level angled footrest. The test boat featured a 70-quart cooler integrated beneath the footrest, which is designed with a cutout rack for easy access. An optional fold-down backrest on the leaning post converts into an aft-facing seat for observing activities behind the boat. The helm is protected by a standard hardtop with overhead storage and JL Audio speakers. The windshield is constructed with glass sides and a full glass front, including an opening vent.

Bow and Deck Layout

The bow area offers a spacious and comfortable environment with side lounges measuring five feet long and 34 inches deep to the cap rail. The backrests are removable via a simple pin system, allowing for fishing versatility. Cushions lift to reveal non-skid walking surfaces around the bow to maintain freshness of the catch. Under each seat are 50-gallon insulated fish boxes, along with an insulated cooler. Under-deck storage compartments measure 21 inches wide by 21 inches fore and aft and 15 inches deep. Two stanchions are clamped in place to support either the filler cushion or the bow table. The deck is finished with non-skid surfaces and includes receptacles for a bow fly canvas shade, two six-inch pull-up cleats, and a Lumar windlass. The anchor deploys through a stainless steel chute with access to the rode and a cleat. The console seat is 26 inches wide and equipped with stainless steel grab rails on each side and a heavy-duty rubber grab rail on the front. Inside the console is a flush toilet, storage for the bow table, and access to helm rigging. Headroom in the head compartment is five feet, two inches, with 44 inches of seated headroom and a screened port on the port side.

Power and Performance

The Robalo R250 is powered by twin Yamaha 150 horsepower outboards equipped with 15 1/4 by 18 saltwater series propellers. During testing, the boat achieved a top speed of 44.4 miles per hour at 5,800 RPM. The most efficient cruising speed was recorded at 4,000 RPM, where the boat ran at 28.6 miles per hour while consuming 13.2 gallons per hour, equating to 2.2 miles per gallon and a range of 322 statute miles with 10% of the 165-gallon fuel capacity reserved. Acceleration tests showed the R250 planing in 6.2 seconds, reaching 20 miles per hour in that time, 30 miles per hour in 7.4 seconds, and 11.2 seconds to top speed. The boat maintained minimum plane at 22.6 miles per hour. Handling characteristics were described as surefooted and predictable, with a 23-degree dead rise allowing it to carve through turns while holding its line comfortably. The twin 150 horsepower outboards provide quick planing and responsive bow control, enhancing maneuverability especially in tight docking situations, making it suitable for new twin-engine boat operators.

Conclusion

The Robalo R250 successfully integrates the practical fishing features desired by anglers with the comfortable cruising amenities favored by families. Its thoughtful design, spacious layout, and reliable performance make it a versatile vessel suitable for a variety of boating activities. The boat's handling and powertrain offer confidence and ease of use, while the ample storage, live wells, and fish boxes cater to serious fishing needs. Overall, the R250 presents a well-rounded package that meets the expectations of both anglers and recreational boaters.
