Robalo R242EX: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Overview

The Robalo R242EX is a versatile 24-foot center console boat that blends the quality and fishing capabilities of the R242 with enhanced family-friendly features. Designed to accommodate both fishing enthusiasts and those seeking a comfortable platform for entertaining and leisure, the R242EX offers a thoughtful balance of performance, comfort, and functionality.

Exterior Design and Deck Layout

The boat features a 10-inch step up to a fully walkable swim platform spanning the transom, with a four-step reboarding ladder located on the starboard side. The aft deck is outfitted with wraparound seating that comfortably accommodates multiple passengers, including a forward-facing recliner. Storage is abundant beneath the side seats and center back seat, and notably, the boat retains a 16-gallon aerated livewell with a gasketed lid, preserving essential fishing functionality. The leaning post includes a 70-quart cooler secured by a removable pin bar system, allowing for easy removal and replacement with any cooler, a customer-driven design improvement that eliminates deck holes from traditional chocks. Additional fishing amenities include multiple rocket launcher-style rod holders on the leaning post and hardtop, LED spreader lights, combination rod and drink holders, rod holders under the gunwale, padded areas to protect reels, and a tow rail beneath the gunwale.

Bow and Seating Features

The R242EX offers 360-degree bolstered seating with heights ranging from 21 to 27 inches, capped at a safe 28 inches. The bow features wraparound seating with removable seat backs for added comfort and convenient grab handles. Storage compartments beneath the seats include two 36-gallon fish boxes with overboard drains and a built-in cooler situated between them. Clever storage solutions are integrated for the removable table pedestals, which can be used to set up a table or converted into a sun pad with cushions removed, or alternatively, a casting platform, maintaining the boat's fishing versatility. The head compartment, located just forward and aft of the console, includes dedicated storage for table pedestals and a port light for ventilation.

Helm and Electronics

The helm is equipped with a tempered safety glass windshield and two self-draining recessed storage areas atop the console. The dash is finished with vinyl and can accommodate either one or two Garmin 10-inch or Simrad 9-inch multifunction displays, all NMEA 2000 compatible, enabling a fully integrated glass helm without traditional gauges. Push-button switches flank the displays and illuminate when activated. The helm includes stereo controls with auxiliary, MP3, and USB inputs, multiple auxiliary plugs, trim tab controls, stainless steel drink holders, and a stainless steel steering wheel with an integrated steering knob mounted on a tilt base. Below the dash, lockable glove storage, ignition switches positioned outside the knee-strike zone, and Yamaha engine controls are accessible. Two levels of footrests support both standing and seated operation. The helm seat is a double-wide design with multi-tone upholstery, custom embroidery, and individual flip-up bolsters for both seats. A hardtop overhead provides protection and includes an electronics box, courtesy lights, and elongated supports integrated into the console to preserve side deck space, with integrated handholds on the rear.

Additional Features and Storage

Forward of the helm, a lift-and-lock latch opens the anchor locker, which has room for a windlass behind the cleat. A stainless steel anchor roller is positioned on the bow. The wash-down connection is located on the port side, with easy access to the rode on both sides. The cockpit is accessed via a walk-through door, behind which lies the main electrical panel and battery switch. Under the center cushion, there is a battery charger, storage shelf, rigging for the fuel tank, and battery compartments.

Power and Performance

The Robalo 242 Explorer measures 24 feet overall with a beam of 8 feet 9 inches and a draft of 35 inches. The boat's empty weight is 4,800 pounds. With 45% fuel and two people aboard, the test weight was approximately 5,609 pounds. Powered by a 300-horsepower Yamaha F300 UCA engine turning a 15.5-inch three-bladed Saltwater Series II propeller, the boat achieved a top speed of 46.3 miles per hour at 6,074 RPM. The optimal cruising speed was 24.2 miles per hour at 3,500 RPM, where fuel consumption was 8.1 gallons per hour, yielding approximately 3 miles per gallon and a range of 375 statute miles with a 10% fuel reserve from the 140-gallon total capacity. The boat planes quickly, reaching plane in 3.5 seconds, 20 miles per hour in 5.5 seconds, and 30 miles per hour in 8.2 seconds. Handling characteristics include a smooth transition over wakes, minimal spray due to a generous bow flare, and virtually no hull slap. The boat exhibits balanced turns with gentle roll and slide, providing a forgiving and comfortable ride even under aggressive maneuvers.

Conclusion

The Robalo R242EX successfully combines the offshore-capable handling and fishing features of a center console with family-oriented comfort and entertainment amenities. Its thoughtful design, performance, and versatility make it a well-rounded boat suitable for both anglers and families seeking a safe, comfortable, and enjoyable experience on the water.
