Robalo R180: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Boat Test Review on BoatTest.com

Overview

The Robalo R180 is designed as an affordable fishing boat option, combining practical features with solid performance. Measuring 18 feet 4 inches in length overall with an 8-foot beam, this model aims to deliver a comfortable and responsive boating experience while maintaining a budget-friendly price point. The boat draws 2 feet 2.5 inches of water and has an empty weight of 2,600 pounds. When loaded with three quarters fuel and two people, the test weight reached 3,175 pounds.

Exterior Design and Hull Characteristics

The R180 features an 18-degree dead rise hull with single lifting strakes on each side, contributing to stability and efficient planing. The flat keel, resembling a running pad, is designed to facilitate quick planing times and reduce bow rise during acceleration. The fuel fill is flush-mounted on the cap rail to port of the console, supporting a 50-gallon fuel capacity. The boat’s trailerability is enhanced by its manageable size and weight.

Helm and Console Layout

The helm area is thoughtfully arranged, providing a comfortable distance between the helm and leaning post that accommodates both standing and seated operation. A footrest under the seat adds comfort, although a recessed footrest in the console could further improve ergonomics. The helm features a stainless steel steering wheel, grab handles, and drink holders, which is notable for a boat in this price range. The instrument panel is cleanly organized with two rows of toggle switches flanking Yamaha digital multifunction gauges, leaving ample space for an optional 12-inch display. A center-mounted compass is standard, flanked by two recessed, rubber-mounted, self-draining storage areas. The windshield is secured in a sealed base to prevent water intrusion and reduce vibration, with a stainless steel rail providing a secure handhold.

Power and Performance

Our test boat was powered by a 115-horsepower Yamaha 4-stroke outboard, with an option to upgrade to a 150-horsepower engine. Equipped with standard hydraulic steering, the R180 demonstrated responsive and precise handling. The boat handled waves and wakes smoothly, maintaining an even keel and providing stable, controlled re-entry after wave launches. Hard turns introduced some ventilation but were generally comfortable, while normal turns were effortless. Performance testing revealed a top speed of 41.1 miles per hour at 6,000 RPM, consuming 10.4 gallons per hour for a range of 178 miles. The most efficient cruise was at 3,500 RPM and 20.1 miles per hour, burning just 3.8 gallons per hour for a range of 237 miles. The boat felt most comfortable cruising at 4,000 RPM and 25.5 miles per hour, balancing speed and fuel economy. Thanks to the flat keel design, the R180 achieved a quick planing time of 3.8 seconds. Acceleration to 20 miles per hour took 8.1 seconds, and it reached 30 miles per hour in 12.1 seconds.

Conclusion

The Robalo R180 presents itself as a very comfortable and practical fishing boat, especially considering its affordability. The combination of thoughtful design elements, solid build quality, and efficient performance make it a compelling choice for anglers seeking value without sacrificing essential features. The boat, motor, and trailer package is priced under $30,000, making it accessible for many buyers. Overall, the R180 delivers a balanced blend of comfort, handling, and economy suitable for a variety of recreational fishing applications.
