Overview

The 2016 Robalo R160 is a 16-foot center console boat designed primarily for first-time boat buyers and anglers seeking a compact yet capable fishing vessel. Priced under $20,000, it includes a reliable engine, trailer, and Robalo's notable 10-year warranty. Despite its modest size, the R160 incorporates the same Kevlar-reinforced hull construction, stainless steel hardware, and meticulous craftsmanship found in Robalo's larger models, ensuring durability and quality.

Exterior Design and Deck Layout

The R160 features diamond lustre non-skid surfaces throughout, including the bow area, which is designed to withstand heavy foot traffic from fishermen and water sports enthusiasts. Stainless steel grab handles are strategically placed for safety. To maximize usable space at the bow, navigation lights have been relocated to the sides of the center console, and a pop-up cleat bearing the Robalo logo is installed forward, creating a clean and functional casting deck. The bow houses an insulated storage compartment with an overboard drain, suitable for storing drinks or keeping the catch fresh. Forward of the console, there is a second cooler with an optional cushion and six vertical rod holders. An optional 16-gallon livewell system further enhances the boat’s fishing capabilities. The forward-facing backrest on the center console conceals a large storage compartment for dry storage and the aft navigation light.

Cockpit and Additional Features

The cockpit offers a depth of 22 inches and 8-inch wide side cap rails for added security. The aft jump seats feature folding backrests that quickly convert the area into an extended casting platform. A fiberglass transom entry step is located on the starboard side for convenient boarding. Under the starboard jump seat, the battery switch and marine battery are housed, while the port side provides storage for a 5-gallon bucket. The gas tank is protected by a non-skid cover, and the engine mount includes a Robalo-branded backing plate. The helm seat is equipped with a reversible backrest and conceals a large integrated cooler with a 70-quart capacity, designed to also accommodate two additional 5-gallon buckets. The helm console includes an acrylic windshield framed in aluminum for strength and refined fit and finish. The console top features two indented, self-draining non-skid areas ideal for cell phones, and ample space is available below for optional electronics installation. The tilting steering wheel allows comfortable operation whether seated or standing, and the helm station provides generous legroom. A user-friendly kill switch attachment enhances operator safety.

Power and Performance

The Robalo R160 comes standard with a 60-horsepower Yamaha engine, with optional upgrades to 70 or 90 horsepower. The test boat was equipped with the 70-horsepower four-stroke Yamaha outboard. The vessel has a beam of 7 feet and a weight of 1,674 pounds. Thanks to Robalo's Hydra-Lift multi-angle hull design and extended V-plane running surface, the boat achieved plane in 6 seconds, reached 20 miles per hour in 8.7 seconds, and 30 miles per hour in 15.2 seconds. The top speed recorded was 35.1 miles per hour at 6,100 RPM, consuming 6.2 gallons per hour, which translates to a range of 62 statute miles on the standard 12-gallon fuel tank. An 18-gallon fuel tank option is also available for extended range. The optimal cruising speed was 25 miles per hour at 4,500 RPM, providing an 83-mile range. The boat’s shallow 10-inch draft facilitates access to shallow fishing areas.
