Robalo 272: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Overview

The Robalo R272 is the second largest center console in Robalo's seven-boat center console fleet, designed as a no-compromise fishing machine that also offers creature comforts for family use. With a beam of 9 feet 6 inches, the R272 provides spaciousness and versatility, accommodating both serious anglers and recreational users.

Exterior Design and Deck Layout

The R272's wide 9'6" beam creates generous side deck clearance of 22 inches on either side of the helm console, enhanced by a T-top support system integrated into the console rather than traditional aluminum pipes. The T-top comes standard with three panes of tempered safety glass, a powered vent, windshield wiper, and powder-coated frame available in white or black, with additional color options for customization. Standard features on the hardtop include five rod holders, spreader lights, helm lighting, and overhead storage, complemented by grab rails on both sides. The bow area features 37-ounce vinyl cushions with stain-resistant treatment and wraparound bolsters, removable forward-facing backrests, and a filler panel that converts the casting deck into a large sun pad or table. Below the bow seating are two 25-gallon insulated, self-draining fish boxes that double as coolers, alongside an insulated cooler forward. The boat employs a through-the-stem anchor system to keep the deck clear, with a standard 14-pound galvanized anchor and optional stainless steel plow anchor. The transom includes a 20-inch wide dive door with hardware for a reboarding ladder and dedicated storage in the head compartment. The aft cockpit features a 30-gallon aerated live well, a 100-gallon primary fish box with overboard discharge, an out-facing seat with an insulated 20-gallon live well or cooler beneath, and a fold-out transom seat for added comfort. Access to swim platforms and engines is via a starboard transom gate with a recessed four-step ladder meeting ABYC standards. Additional rod holders and rocket launchers are strategically placed around the boat for fishing convenience.

Helm and Instrumentation

The helm console is spacious, with 22 inches of clearance on each side, and features a 12-inch Simrad display, Yamaha engine gauges, and a cubby for cell phones. Push-button accessory switches illuminate when activated, and the tilt steering wheel includes a rubberized back and steering knob. Controls for the sound system, a 12-volt outlet, and USB port are conveniently located to the right of the wheel. Below the dash are two molded footrests designed for leaning or sitting. The compass is centered atop the dash, flanked by two open storage compartments with drains. The control binnacle is mounted nearly vertically and includes Lenco trim tabs with indicator lights. The helm leaning post seats two, upholstered in three-tone vinyl with the Robalo logo, and features separate bolsters for comfort.

Interior and Head Compartment

The R272 offers a forward-opening door to the head compartment, which on the test boat included an optional electric toilet with an 8-gallon holding tank; a port-a-potty is standard. The head has an opening port vent and storage for the forward table and its attachments. Sitting headroom measures 3 feet 7 inches, with standing headroom at 5 feet 1 inch, providing reasonable comfort within the console space.

Fishing and Storage Features

Fishing amenities are well thought out, with a deep bolster that encircles the boat for safety and comfort. The side entry door is covered by a sturdy interlocking covering board. Stainless steel handrails and a towrail run along both sides of the boat, supporting anglers during active fishing. Gunwale rod racks on either side include padded mats to protect reels. The boat is equipped with multiple rod holders, including five rocket launchers on the hardtop and additional holders around the transom and sides. The large 100-gallon fish box with overboard discharge pump and insulated live wells enhance the boat's fishing capabilities.

Power and Performance

The R272 is powered by twin Yamaha 4-stroke, 4-cylinder 200 horsepower outboards as standard, with an option for twin 250 horsepower engines. The hull features Robalo's Hydrolift multi-angle design with a 23-degree dead rise, nearly the steepest in its class, providing excellent handling in choppy conditions. The boat measures 27 feet 4 inches overall with a 9-foot 6-inch beam and a 32-inch draft. During testing with two people aboard and full fuel, the boat weighed approximately 8,500 pounds. It reached a top speed of 47.3 miles per hour at 6,000 rpm, with a best cruise speed of 24.1 miles per hour at 3,500 rpm consuming 10.9 gallons per hour, yielding an estimated range of 360 statute miles with a 10% fuel reserve. The R272 planes quickly in 3.6 seconds, hits 20 mph in 5.9 seconds, and 30 mph in 8.9 seconds, exhibiting minimal bow rise during acceleration. Handling was smooth with no chine walk or slippage, and trimming was straightforward for optimal performance.

Conclusion

The Robalo R272 successfully blends serious fishing capabilities with family-friendly comfort. Its spacious layout, thoughtful fishing features, and solid performance make it suitable for offshore conditions while maintaining versatility for recreational use. The boat's design and engineering demonstrate Robalo's commitment to quality and functionality, making the R272 a competitive option in the center console market.
