Boattest.com Review
Overview
The Robalo R247 is a dual console boat designed to cater to families who enjoy fishing and a variety of water activities. Equipped with twin Evinrude E-Tech G2 150HO outboard engines, this model offers a blend of offshore capability, performance, and versatility. It aims to deliver both the seaworthiness required by saltwater anglers and the comfort features desired by family boaters.
Power and Performance
Our test boat was powered by two Evinrude E-Tech G2 150HO outboards, each tuned to produce 165 horsepower at maximum RPM, resulting in a combined output of 330 horsepower. The engines turned 15-inch by 18-inch RX4 four-blade stainless steel propellers through 2.171 gear reductions. With two people aboard, three-quarters of a fuel tank, and test gear, the boat weighed approximately 6,028 pounds. Performance testing revealed a top speed of 45.1 miles per hour at 5,700 RPM. The optimal cruising speed was found at 3,500 RPM, where the boat traveled 26.8 miles per hour while consuming 10 gallons of fuel per hour, equating to 2.6 miles per gallon and a range of 325 miles with a 10% fuel reserve. Acceleration was brisk, with the boat planing in 3.2 seconds, reaching 20 miles per hour in 4.8 seconds, and 30 miles per hour in 5.2 seconds. Maneuverability tests showed the R247 to be nimble and responsive, holding smooth turns without cavitation during hard maneuvers. The hydraulic steering integrated into the engines offers adjustable power assist, and the motors trim up to 81 degrees for complete water clearance. The iTrim automatic trim system provides ease of use for beginners, with manual override available for experienced operators.
Hull and Structural Design
The R247 rides on Robalo's Deep V Hydrolift hull, featuring a variable deadrise with 22 degrees at the transom and a slightly rounded pad. Full-length inner and outer strakes, along with a downward-turned chine, help to reduce spray and dampen roll. Standard Lenco trim tabs with position indicators enhance ride control. Structural integrity is reinforced with Kevlar in the keel and transom, composite cores in the hull and deck, and a poured ceramic composite transom. The boat is backed by a 10-year structural warranty. The optional T-top on our test model included overhead life jacket storage, spreader lights, speakers, two electronics boxes, and four integrated rod holders.
Exterior and Cockpit Features
The aft cockpit offers ample space for fishing activities, with a cockpit depth of 27 inches and a gated passage to the swim platform. The swim platform features a ladder housed in its own locker. The aft bench seat folds up to maximize space, and a table can be installed with a dedicated deck receptacle. Rod racks are positioned outboard on each side, and a 19-gallon livewell is standard in the aft starboard corner. An insulated transom locker serves as an icebox for catches. The entire aft seat base hinges upward on stainless steel struts for easy maintenance access, revealing battery switches, circuit breakers, fuel water separators, and livewell seacocks. A starboard jump seat opens to storage for a 25-quart cooler and includes integrated cup holders, doubling as a spotter's seat when towing.
Helm and Console Layout
The helm features a bucket seat with a fold-up bolster, providing excellent forward visibility above the windshield header. Controls include Evinrude's Icon touchscreen, a tilt steering wheel, accessory switches on both sides, trim tab and stereo controls to starboard, and a 12-volt power outlet to port. Circuit breakers are easily accessible, replacing traditional fuses. The companion seat to port rotates to face forward, either side, or aft for use as a spotter's seat or to face the café table. The port console houses a private head compartment with a standard porta potty and an optional upgrade to an electric toilet with a sink and countertop. Headroom in the compartment measures 50 inches. The driver's console includes a large storage compartment with a hatch that doubles as an air dam to close off the bow passageway.
Bow Area and Additional Features
The bow features removable bottom cushions and backrest padding, enclosed by a stainless steel rail. The bow depth measures 34 inches, and a deck socket allows for table installation. Options include a filler panel that converts the bow into a casting platform and a filler cushion that creates a sun lounge. Storage compartments beneath the folding hatches provide space, though compartmentalization could be improved. The foredeck is equipped with an optional windlass with foot controls and pull-up cleats designed to prevent fishing line snags.
Conclusion
The Robalo R247 successfully fulfills its promise as a seaworthy, family-friendly fishing boat that balances strong fishing capabilities with comfortable amenities. Powered by efficient and powerful twin Evinrude E-Tech G2 150HO outboards, it delivers impressive speed, fuel economy, and versatility for both saltwater anglers and recreational boaters. Its thoughtful design, solid construction, and well-appointed features make it a compelling choice for those seeking a reliable and enjoyable dual console boat.
