Overview

The Ravallo 246 Cayman is the flagship model of the Ravallo Cayman fleet, designed to serve dual purposes as both a fishing vessel and a family cruiser suitable for protected waters. This versatile boat blends practical fishing features with creature comforts aimed at accommodating the entire family, making it a well-rounded choice for varied boating activities.

Power and Performance

Powered by an Evinrude E-TEC G2 300 outboard engine with a 25-inch shaft, the Ravallo 246 Cayman is rated for a maximum of 300 horsepower. The test boat was equipped with a 20-inch pitch by 15 and 1/8 inch four-bladed propeller. With two people aboard and 60 gallons of fuel, the estimated weight was approximately 4,480 pounds. Performance testing recorded a top speed of 46.5 miles per hour at 5,500 RPM. The optimal cruising speed was found at 3,500 RPM, where the boat maintained 28.3 miles per hour while consuming 7.8 gallons per hour, yielding a fuel efficiency of 3.62 miles per gallon and a cruising range of 246 statute miles with a 10% fuel reserve. Acceleration tests showed the boat reached 20 miles per hour in 4.6 seconds and 30 miles per hour in 7.2 seconds.

Exterior Design and Deck Layout

The multi-level bow casting deck features five hatches providing access to an anchor locker, a 20-gallon insulated live well, twin rod storage compartments, and a central dry storage area. The deck incorporates a molded tow rail, with an 11-inch step up to lounges measuring 49 inches in length and a 73-inch wide settee. The anchor locker includes a recessed area for the rode and secure keepers for the anchor. The upper bow deck steps up an additional 9.5 inches, measuring 71 inches across and 46 inches deep to the tow rail, creating a spacious and functional platform for anglers. The bow area also caters to family comfort with a U-shaped settee that can accommodate an optional bow table, forward-facing backrests on port and starboard lounges, and an additional seat on the front of the center console equipped with grab rails on all three sides.

Center Console and Helm

The center console design is notable for its full-face swing-open door, providing easier access to additional storage and an optional head compared to traditional side doors. The helm features a steering wheel positioned slightly starboard of center, placing the driver between the wheel and throttle control, while the observer is seated to port. The dash is designed to accept flush-mounted electronics and is flanked by dual switch panels for functional control. Molded storage trays are integrated on top of the console. The aft face includes a cubby, a storage compartment housing the battery switch, and a footrest at the base. The optional leaning post offers padded cushions and a bolster that can be flipped up for secure standing support or down for comfortable seating.

Additional Features and Cockpit

A molded fiberglass hardtop supported by powder-coated aluminum legs enhances both aesthetics and comfort, providing protection without the drawbacks of canvas tops. The gunnels measure 19 inches to the top of the combing pad, with a clearance of at least 16 inches between the console and bulwarks, and a 10-inch wide gunnel top. The stern casting deck spans 8 feet 7 inches across by 4 feet 1 inch deep, featuring twin 30-gallon insulated livewells each with dedicated pumps, which can also be used as fish boxes. A hatch on the starboard corner conceals a telescoping swim ladder. The cockpit sole includes two stainless steel deck drains. For fishing convenience, rod holders are strategically placed on the leaning post, T-top, rear casting deck, and horizontally under each gunnel. Secure docking is ensured by 8-inch pull-up cleats that are through-bolted to the deck.

Hull and Windshield Updates

The Ravallo 246 Cayman’s hull is relatively large for a bay boat, featuring a high sheer and pronounced hull flare that enhance offshore capabilities while maintaining access to skinny water areas. For the latest model year, the windshield has been upgraded to a tempered glass design that eliminates distortion, provides stronger structural support, and improves safety with more robust handholds. Importantly, ventilation has been preserved despite these enhancements.
