Boattest.com Review
Overview
The Robalo R242 is a versatile 24-foot center console boat designed to accommodate either single or twin outboard engines up to 400 horsepower. With a length overall of 24 feet, a beam of 8 feet 9 inches, and a draft of 20 inches, the R242 offers a well-balanced platform suitable for both fishing and family outings. The boat’s empty weight is 4,800 pounds, and during testing with 40% fuel and two people aboard, the estimated test weight was 5,660 pounds.
Power and Performance
Powered by twin Yamaha F-150XV outboards during testing, the R242 achieved a top speed of 45.6 miles per hour at 6,000 RPM. Its most efficient cruising speed was found at 4,000 RPM, delivering 28.1 miles per hour with a fuel consumption of 11.6 gallons per hour. This efficiency translates to a range of approximately 327 statute miles, maintaining a 10% fuel reserve from the 150-gallon capacity. The boat’s extended V-plane hull, featuring a 22-degree dead rise and sharp entry, provides quick planing—reaching planing speed in 3.3 seconds, 20 mph in 5.6 seconds, and 30 mph in 7.1 seconds. Handling is precise and predictable, with firm tracking, no chine walk, and aggressive hold through turns. The standard C-Star hydraulic steering with a tie bar linking the engines performed well, though power assist steering is recommended for enhanced control. Offshore testing demonstrated the R242’s smooth ride over waves, with no hull slap or pounding even in head seas at full throttle. Safety is further supported by generous freeboard measurements of 33 inches aft and 43 inches forward.
Fishing Features and Exterior Design
The R242’s center console layout is optimized for fishing functionality. Rod storage includes molded-in rod holders with protective tubes and padded bolsters ranging from 19 to 27 inches for comfort and rod protection. A tow rail provides added security when fighting fish. The aft deck features optional cup holders that double as rod holders, and a 27-gallon divided live well with friction hinges, lift-and-lock latches, and internal blue LED lighting can be used as a live well, fish locker, or insulated cooler. Forward of the console, a 70-quart cooler and five additional rod holders are integrated into a powder-coated rail. The optional fiberglass T-top includes four rocket launchers, pre-rigging for Taco Grand Slam outriggers, LED spreader lights, and a lockable molded-in radio box. The white powder-coated supports incorporate integrated handrails at multiple heights and maintain 20 inches of side deck clearance. The bow features 360-degree padded bolsters, recessed stainless-steel grab rails, an elevated casting deck 17.5 inches above the deck, dual 30-gallon fish lockers, and a 20-gallon live well centrally located.
Operational Features and Helm
The R242 is equipped with a Lumar windlass for ground tackle management, complemented by a stainless steel anchor roller and cleat for secure anchoring. The anchor rode is routed through a notched hatch into an accessible compartment for easy tangle management. Foot control switches and helm controls provide convenient windlass operation. Optional pull-up cleats with branding are installed, and deck drains are molded into the deck for efficient water management and safety. The helm console features a distortion-free acrylic windshield, two storage compartments for small items, and a shaded brow covering a panel designed for two 12-inch displays. Backlit rocker switches with icons and labels, a central digital gauge, and Lenco trim tabs with LED indicators are positioned for ergonomic use near the throttle. The steering wheel is mounted on a tilt base and includes a steering knob. Standard electronics include a Clarion stereo with Bluetooth and USB connectivity. Additional helm storage includes a covered glove box, open storage, and a footrest. The helm seat is double-wide with separate cushions and bolsters, padded ends for comfort when sitting sideways, though a single continuous cushion might improve ergonomics. Notably, the entire transom opens to provide full access to mechanical components such as the holding tank, pumps, filters, and bilge pump, facilitating maintenance.
Family Features and Interior Comfort
The R242 transitions smoothly from a fishing platform to a family-friendly boat. The transom seat spans 5 feet 2 inches and features an angled backrest for enhanced comfort and easy deployment. Dual swim platforms flank the transom with a pull-out swim ladder on the starboard side, complemented by a freshwater shower for convenience. The console is designed lower and more compact than typical models, improving visibility for both standing and seated occupants and increasing side deck clearance. A patented door provides forward access to a 22.5-inch-wide head compartment equipped with a vacu-flush toilet, lighting, ventilation, and a towel rack mounted on the door’s interior. Forward seating includes padded seats with optional seat backs and a filler cushion that converts the bow area into a sun pad. Upholstery quality is high, featuring double-tone, custom embroidery, triple French stitching with seam backing, and thick 36-ounce vinyl with a 10-mil top coat for stain and UV protection.
Conclusion
The Robalo R242 is a thoughtfully designed 24-foot center console that balances fishing functionality with family comfort. Its strong performance, efficient hull design, and well-integrated features make it a capable and enjoyable boat for a variety of uses. The attention to detail in both operational and comfort aspects, combined with quality construction and materials, positions the R242 as a versatile and well-mannered vessel suitable for anglers and families alike.
