Rinker 246 Captiva: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Overview

Rinker has introduced significant updates in recent years, highlighted by the all-new Captiva 246. This versatile runabout is offered in three distinct configurations to suit various boating preferences: the base bow rider, the performance-oriented R2 model tailored for ski and wakeboard enthusiasts, and the more traditional Cuddy model featuring an enclosed cabin. Despite their differences, all three share a common cockpit design that emphasizes comfort and functionality.

Exterior Design and Cockpit Layout

The Captiva 246’s cockpit is designed for socializing and convenience, featuring a large U-shaped lounge in the aft section with a portside transom walkthrough for easy access. An insulated cooler is cleverly integrated beneath the rear seating, complemented by a compact wet bar on the starboard side. A removable snack table enhances the area’s versatility, making it an inviting space for entertaining. The stern includes a spacious sun lounge with a multi-position pad that can cover the transom walkthrough, leading to a generous swim platform equipped with a large locker suitable for wakeboard storage, a transom shower, and numerous cup holders. Forward, the bow accommodates seating for four around another snack table, with a deep anchor locker beneath the forward cushion and a boarding ladder at the forepeak to facilitate beach access.

Helm and Companion Features

The helm station exudes a sporty, European-inspired aesthetic, centered around a contoured tilt steering wheel. Instrumentation includes grouped Feria gauges for clear visibility and conveniently placed toggle switches for accessories. A Clarion AM/FM/CD stereo remote is within easy reach. Adjacent to the helm, a spacious compartment serves as a changing area or a discreet location for a portable toilet. Between the two swivel bucket seats, which feature Mil-Sco tri-tech suspension, flip-up bolsters, and thick padding, there is a ski locker providing ample storage for gear.

Specialized Configurations: R2 and Cuddy Models

The R2 model is engineered for serious watersports enthusiasts, equipped with a robust tubular aluminum tower that can be fitted with speakers and board racks. It also includes Perfect Pass speed control to assist riders in maintaining optimal speeds. The Cuddy model caters to boaters seeking overnight accommodations, featuring a cozy enclosed cabin with a V-shaped lounge that converts into a double berth. The cabin offers storage space and a securely stowed portable toilet, making it suitable for extended day trips or short overnight stays.

Power and Performance

All three Captiva 246 variants measure 26 feet 2 inches in length with a beam of 8 feet 6 inches. The bow rider model is powered by a robust 375-horsepower MerCruiser 496 MPI engine, achieving a top speed of 57.2 miles per hour and cruising efficiently around 39 miles per hour. Both the R2 and Cuddy models come standard with a 350-horsepower MerCruiser Mag MPI engine. The R2 reaches a top speed of 50.5 miles per hour with an estimated range of 160 miles, while the Cuddy attains 49.4 miles per hour at wide-open throttle and a range of approximately 147 miles. The Captiva 246 offers a broad selection of engine options across its three configurations, providing flexibility to meet diverse boating needs.

Conclusion

With its trio of thoughtfully designed configurations, the Captiva 246 presents a versatile option for a wide range of boaters. Whether prioritizing sporty performance, watersports capabilities, or comfortable overnight accommodations, this model combines practical features, stylish design, and solid performance. Its adaptable cockpit, multiple powertrain choices, and specialized layouts make it a compelling choice for those seeking a capable and enjoyable day boat or weekend cruiser.
