Rinker tossed out the old plans for the 226 and started fresh with the 2006 version of this popular 23-foot runabout. Now don't get me wrong, the old design was a good one, but once in awhile, you can take a great design and make it even better. Rinker did just that, and you will be as impressed as I was. The 226 comes in two versions, the base model SE, and the R1 wakeboarding edition and this is the R1.

Rinker 226 CAPTIVA: BoatTEST Review
Overview
For 2006, Rinker introduced a completely redesigned 226 model, available in three versions: the basic model, the SE, and the R1. This redesign focuses on delivering an ergonomic interior combined with a hull engineered for an exciting and comfortable ride. The 226 is designed to perform well in a variety of conditions, from calm waters to rough near-shore environments and busy lakes.
Exterior Design and Deck Features
The 226 features practical exterior elements such as a beach boarding ladder that facilitates easy re-boarding from the water, and stainless steel pull-up cleats that remain flush with the bow when not in use, enhancing safety and aesthetics. The bow area is designed for comfort with thick cushions and lounger backs equipped with built-in armrests. Fourteen stainless steel cup holders are strategically placed throughout the boat, including the front quarters, which also feature speakers and low bow rails for added security. Deep lockers in the bow provide ample storage space for gear, and under the bow seat there is a dedicated nesting slot for the anchor line and a Danforth-style anchor. Walk-through bow doors offer protection from cool morning air, enhancing passenger comfort.
Helm and Cockpit Amenities
The helm is outfitted with fog-free Faria gauges and bright trim, including an easy-to-read digital depth gauge. All electrical switches are breaker-protected for safety. The center instrument gauge can be optionally replaced with the Perfect Pass Pro Series speed controller. A five-position tilt steering wheel is standard. Both helm and companion seats are Millsco tri-tech suspension seats featuring slide and swivel adjustments, armrests, and flip-up bolsters for enhanced comfort. The companion dash complements the helm with its own cup holder, grab rail, and dual glove boxes; the lower box offers deep storage for dry items, while the upper box houses a Clarion Sirius Satellite Ready AM/FM CD player. Beneath the snap-in carpet lies a large in-floor storage locker suitable for ski gear and long items.
Cockpit and Seating Configuration
The cockpit includes a removable table that can be positioned either at the bow or stern for convenient dining or snacking. The seating area converts into a wraparound bench by inserting a filler cushion, with a dedicated space beneath the center cushion for a 25-quart removable cooler. The walk-through transom cushion has three adjustable positions, allowing for easy passage when lifted. Additional storage is integrated into the walk-through area. The sun pad lifts to provide easy access to the engine compartment, which is illuminated by LED lighting for pre-launch checks. Adjacent to the engine is a storage box specifically designed for life jackets.
Swim Platform and Optional Features
The integral swim platform includes a swim ladder and a line locker, as well as a stern trunk with sufficient space to store a wakeboard. An optional stereo remote mounted on the swim platform allows passengers to control music without leaving the water. The R1 package upgrades the 226 with a wakeboard tower capable of handling boards and an enhanced speaker system. It also includes the Perfect Pass Pro speed controller and Linko trim tabs to optimize weight control and boat handling. A rearview mirror is added to help monitor water activities behind the boat.
Dimensions and Performance
The Rinker 226 measures 23 feet 6 inches in length overall with a beam width of 8 feet 6 inches, and it weighs approximately 3,650 pounds. It carries 42 gallons of fuel. Performance testing of the R1 variant demonstrated a rapid time to plane of 2.9 seconds and reached 30 miles per hour at 6.3 seconds. The boat cruised most efficiently at around 3,500 RPM, achieving a speed of 36.1 miles per hour and a range of approximately 154 miles.
Conclusion
The 2006 Rinker 226 offers a well-thought-out design with ergonomic features, ample storage, and comfortable seating arrangements. Its hull design provides a smooth and exciting ride across various water conditions. The availability of different packages, including the sporty R1 with wakeboarding enhancements, allows buyers to tailor the boat to their recreational preferences. Overall, the 226 presents a compelling option for those seeking a versatile and enjoyable day boat.
