Regulator Marine 30 Express: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Overview

The Regulator 30 Express is a new model from Regulator that uniquely combines family comfort with serious fishing capabilities. This 30-foot, 5-inch vessel introduces a cabin for the first time in the series, enhancing versatility for both fishing excursions and family outings. With a beam width of 10 feet, 7 inches, and a dry weight of 11,350 pounds, the boat is designed to deliver performance and comfort in equal measure.

Exterior Design and Cockpit Features

Externally, the Regulator 30 Express features an Armstrong bracket for the engines, replacing the traditional integrated bracket. This design change not only improved performance but also gained over 40 inches of usable space extending into the cabin. The cockpit offers more than 42 square feet of space, providing ample room for both fishing activities and family gatherings. The stern wall houses twin opening 340-quart fish boxes capable of storing a significant amount of catch or gear. The cockpit is outfitted with 316L stainless steel hall pipes and rod holders on each side, complemented by three rocket launcher-style rod holders along the hardtop back stays, underscoring the boat's fishing pedigree. Comfortable bolsters surround the cockpit, enhancing comfort during fishing or leisure. The hardtop is structurally robust yet maintains excellent sight lines for both seated and standing operators.

Bridge and Helm Station

The helm features Northstar instrumentation positioned high for optimal visibility, which proved easy to read during testing. The helm seat is fully adjustable with a flip-down armrest and a comfortable pump, facilitating safe and ergonomic operation. The boat is equipped with an optional bow thruster, enhancing maneuverability. Good grab rails and the hardtop structure provide secure handholds when moving forward on deck. The bow area includes a standard windlass and ample space for anchoring activities.

Interior Living Spaces

The introduction of a cabin is a notable departure for Regulator, adding a new dimension of family comfort. The cabin includes a head on the starboard side, complete with a toilet, sink, and solid countertops, offering approximately 70 inches of headroom. When configured for fishing, the cabin space can serve as storage, but it also features a double-wide bed suitable for children or adults to relax. An adjustable-height table with a filler cushion converts the area into a V-berth for overnight stays. Regulator is actively refining interior wood color schemes to enhance the production models' aesthetics.

Power and Performance

Powered by twin Yamaha 350 horsepower eight-cylinder four-stroke outboards, the Regulator 30 Express demonstrated impressive performance during testing around the Miami Boat Show. Despite challenging conditions, the boat handled rough water confidently, exhibiting smooth acceleration and solid turns. The hull design effectively slices through heavy chop, smoothing the ride. The boat planes in 5.7 seconds and reaches 30 miles per hour in nine seconds. Cruising speed is approximately 23.8 miles per hour at 3,500 RPM, providing a range of 291 miles on a full 300-gallon fuel tank. Additionally, the boat carries 35 gallons of water, supporting extended outings.

Conclusion

The Regulator 30 Express successfully blends the demands of a serious fishing machine with family-friendly features, marking a significant evolution in the Regulator lineup. Its spacious cockpit, robust construction, comfortable cabin, and reliable performance make it a versatile choice for families who want to enjoy both fishing and leisure boating. Given Regulator's reputation for quality and durability, this new model is poised to be well received by those seeking a multi-purpose offshore vessel.
