Regulator Marine 29 FS: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Overview

The Regulator 29FS is a thoughtfully designed center console boat that fits between the 26 and 32-foot models in Regulator's lineup. Developed over two and a half years with input from dealers, this model aims to combine solid construction, practical features, and modern electronics to appeal to tournament anglers and recreational boaters alike.

Exterior Design and Deck Layout

The 29FS features a solid fiberglass hull with classic Carolina flair and hard chines that contribute to a smooth, dry ride. The hull design includes a dedicated transducer pocket to provide clearer sonar readings with less interference. On the foredeck, pop-up bow lights and cleats are standard, along with a spacious anchor locker that offers ample storage for gear. The forward deck can be configured as a raised casting platform or converted into a comfortable seating area with cushions and padded bolsters surrounding the perimeter. All deck lids are resin transfer molded, gasketed, and lockable, with finished undersides for durability. Notably, the large fish rod locker in the floor boasts a 520-quart capacity and features a soft-closing lid for quiet operation.

Helm and Electronics

The helm area is designed with functionality and comfort in mind. A bench seat in front of the helm incorporates a 64-quart insulated cooler. The console interior provides an impressive 6 feet 3 inches of headroom, allowing easy access to electronics panels, triple battery systems, and accessory connections. Battery switches are conveniently located for operation without entering the console. The standard electric toilet includes a 6-gallon holding tank. The helm is equipped for modern electronics, featuring full-width electronic storage. The test boat was outfitted with an optional Edson wheel paired with Teleflex power assist steering, Lenco trim tab controls for 14 by 18 inch tabs, and Yamaha Command Link digital gauges that monitor engine performance. Breaker-protected switches are positioned adjacent to the gauges. An optional leaning post includes a tackle center and side drawers for organized storage. The optional T-top is fitted with 18-foot Leeside Wonder outriggers with lay-down mounts, five rocket launcher rod holders, and an overhead electronics box for additional gear.

Aft Deck and Systems

At the stern, dock lines pass through dedicated hosers for spring and stern lines leading to robust 10-inch cleats. Under the gunwales, fresh water and raw water wash-down connections are conveniently located. The port side features an 84-quart insulated fish box, while a large 30-gallon live well occupies the center of the transom. Both compartments are supported by stainless steel struts designed to withstand harsh saltwater conditions. A flip door on the starboard side provides easy access to the recommended twin Yamaha four-stroke outboards, facilitating boarding and maintenance.

Dimensions and Performance

The Regulator 29FS measures 29 feet in length overall with a beam of 9 feet 6 inches. The boat's dry weight, excluding engines, is approximately 6,900 pounds, and it carries 285 gallons of fuel. Powered by twin Yamaha 250 four-stroke engines, the 29FS demonstrated excellent performance during testing. The optimal cruising speed was found at 4,000 RPM, achieving 32.1 miles per hour and an estimated range of 388 miles. The top speed reached 52.7 miles per hour at 5,800 RPM. Throughout testing, the vessel exhibited a notably smooth, dry, and solid ride, characteristic of Regulator's reputation for quality construction.

Conclusion

The Regulator 29FS presents a well-rounded package for anglers seeking a reliable, high-performance center console boat with ample storage, modern electronics, and thoughtful design features. Its solid build quality, combined with practical amenities and strong performance metrics, make it a compelling choice for tournament fishing and recreational outings. Ultimately, its true measure will be in how effectively it supports anglers in bringing in their catch.
