Regal LX9: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Overview

The Regal LX9 is a versatile 29-foot day boat that combines the features of a dual console, bowrider, and sport boat into a single hull design. Positioned as a luxury day boat, the LX9 aims to deliver a comprehensive package with premium features and performance. This model reflects Regal's commitment to traditional bowrider design at a time when many brands are moving away from this style.

Exterior Design and Deck Features

The LX9 measures 29 feet in length overall with a nine-foot beam and an empty weight of 7,600 pounds. The boat is equipped with a power hardtop that offers multiple benefits, including additional storage, ease of passage under bridges, and the ability to lower it to the windshield for an open-air experience while underway. The cockpit area is designed for versatile entertaining, featuring a movable platform that can extend to provide extra space and multiple seating orientations—forward-facing, aft-facing, or lounging. High-quality upholstery with detailed stitching and ergonomic seating enhances comfort. Storage is ample, with large compartments beneath the seating on both sides, an insulated cooler compartment in the sole, and a deep forward storage area for water sports equipment. The sound system includes aft-facing speakers and integrated subwoofers within the hull sides, complemented by removable waterproof Fusion audio control pucks that float, allowing users to adjust music while in the water. Boarding access is facilitated by a ladder on the port side.

Interior Living Spaces

Below deck, the LX9 features a well-appointed head compartment that includes a sink, countertop with a raised edge to prevent items from sliding off, storage cubbies, and an opening port light for ventilation. The design incorporates thoughtful details such as a fold-down armrest and magnetic closures for the windshield and air dam. The helm area is ergonomically designed with adjustable seating that slides forward and aft, providing optimal visibility and comfort. Controls are conveniently located, including joystick, throttles, trim tabs, and bow thruster, along with multiple storage cubbies, some padded to prevent noise. The helm also features digital switching for lighting, windlass operation, audio, and hardtop control, with multifunction display screens that can serve as companion displays.

Power and Performance

The test boat was powered by twin Yamaha 2.8-liter F200 engines. At wide-open throttle, the LX9 achieved a top speed of 51.7 miles per hour at 6,100 RPM. The most efficient cruising speed was approximately 32 miles per hour at 4,000 RPM, yielding a fuel consumption of 14.5 gallons per hour and an estimated range of 300 statute miles while maintaining a 10% fuel reserve from the 150-gallon capacity. The boat planes out smoothly between 3,300 and 3,400 RPM at around 20 miles per hour. Acceleration times were measured at 0 to 10 miles per hour in four seconds, 0 to 20 miles per hour in seven seconds, and 0 to 30 miles per hour in 10.5 seconds. Handling was confident and stable, with smooth turns and minimal need for trim adjustment. The double-stepped FastTrack hull design enhances ride comfort by channeling air under the hull, improving fuel economy and overall performance, particularly noticeable during cruising and turning maneuvers.

Additional Features and Ergonomics

Regal has incorporated numerous thoughtful touches throughout the LX9 to enhance usability and comfort. The helm’s stainless steel bolster bar may obstruct sightlines for some drivers depending on height but can be mitigated by lowering the bolster seat. The helm seat itself is adjustable fore and aft, allowing operators to customize their position relative to the controls and windshield. The boat’s digital switching system enables comprehensive control over lighting, audio, and mechanical systems from the helm. Battery access is conveniently located in the cockpit and helm areas. The anchor locker at the bow is well equipped with a power switch, cleat, safety clasp, and a combination of chain and rope rode. Overall, the LX9’s design balances luxury, practicality, and performance.

Conclusion

The Regal LX9 Ultimate Edition impresses with its combination of versatility, craftsmanship, and performance. Its thoughtful design and high-quality construction deliver a comfortable and capable day boat experience. The boat’s solid build, refined ergonomics, and comprehensive feature set make it well suited for a variety of recreational boating activities, from cruising and watersports to entertaining at the sandbar. After extensive testing in calm conditions in the Florida Keys, the LX9 proves to be a sturdy, well-rounded vessel that meets the expectations for a luxury day boat.
