Overview
The Regal 22 Fastdeck ESX is an entry-level deck boat designed to compete within the growing market of torch deck boats. While fundamentally a bow rider, it features a full 8-foot, 6-inch beam carried throughout the vessel, maximizing usable interior space. A notable design element is its stepped hull, which enhances both speed and fuel efficiency—an uncommon characteristic for deck boats of this size.
Exterior Design and Deck Layout
The bow area is thoughtfully shaped to utilize the full beam almost to the front, providing spacious seating equipped with stainless steel grab handles and cup holders. Integrated Fusion Marine speakers enhance the onboard audio experience. A concealed beach reboarding ladder is positioned fully forward for convenient water access. The hinged seats, supported by gas struts, allow hands-free access to storage compartments beneath. Removing the center cushion reveals a step leading to the forward non-skid deck, which also serves as the first of three mounting locations for the teak side-mount pedestal table. The black powder-coated windshield frame adds a refined aesthetic, and the walkthrough can be closed to shield occupants during cooler conditions.
Cockpit and Seating
The cockpit features a companion seat with a flip-up backrest that integrates seamlessly with the wraparound seating arrangement. Storage is ample, including a large compartment that can be optionally converted into a head. Additional portside storage and a dedicated starboard locker for a carry-on cooler are provided. The sole locker, measuring 70 inches long by 14 inches wide and deep, is suitable for water toys. The second and third teak table mounting points are located in the cockpit and near the swim platform respectively, the latter offering an ideal spot for evening refreshments. Helm Station and Controls
The helm is equipped with basic analog gauges in the test model, though an optional touchscreen RegalView display is available to manage functions such as cruise control and customized engine data. A Fusion Bluetooth UD650 stereo controller is conveniently placed to the left of the steering wheel, while accessory and lighting rocker switches are centrally located between the gauges and radios. A 12-volt charging station is also integrated at the helm. The helm brow is hand-stitched, and the steering wheel is fully adjustable to accommodate both seated and standing driving positions.
Power and Performance
The test boat was powered by a fifth-generation Volvo V6 engine producing 240 horsepower. With a test weight of 4,760 pounds, the boat demonstrated impressive performance metrics: planing was achieved in 3.4 seconds, surpassing 20 mph in 5.3 seconds and 30 mph in 7.3 seconds. The top speed reached 45.7 mph at 5,500 rpm, with a fuel consumption rate of 17.7 gallons per hour, yielding a range of approximately 93 statute miles. The optimal cruising speed was recorded at 27.3 mph at 3,500 rpm, extending the range to 137 statute miles. The throttle response was immediate with no noticeable lag. Regal's proprietary Fast Track hull design contributes to a 26% increase in speed and a 30% improvement in fuel economy compared to conventional hulls. Handling was smooth and predictable during turns.
