The Commodore 3860 is a model that strategically fills the gap between the Commodore 3260 and the flagship 4260, Regal has wisely borrowed many of the features of the 4260 and Regal's 3880 sedan bridge. However, the Commodore 3860 has plenty of unique features, such as the split-level cockpit layout with its semi-circular lounge to the port side. Lift the rear cushion of this lounge and there are the battery switches, easy to get at and conveniently close at hand. The cockpit refreshment station is easily accessible from either cockpit level.
One step down from the raised cockpit level, the aft cockpit has an L-shaped lounge on the port side, and a very clever transom door to starboard that opens and closes with the assistance of a gas actuator. Other notable features in the rear cockpit are a secondary engine hatch, a tip-out trash receptacle and its own removable cooler.
At the aft end of the Regal 3860 there is a large swim platform. On the port side is a concealed three-step swim ladder, but what we found impressive while back on the swim platform were the two separate lockable storage lockers. In the centre of the transom is the other lockable storage compartment, accessible from the swim platform by way of a nifty lid that lifts up and in, or from under the rear cushion of the L-lounge.
Regal's innovative thinking extends into the cabin as well. After lounging above deck, relaxation continues in the salon with recliners built into either end of the Leather Crest salon sofa. Overhead of the salon sofa there are five individual airline-type storage bins.
The Regal 3860 is the only express cruiser under 40 feet that we know of that has two private cabins and two complete head and shower compartments. The forward cabin has a queen-sized berth, two cedar-lined hanging lockers, plenty of drawer storage and private access to the forward head. The mid-cabin has twin berths that can be converted to a single queen berth, stand-up dressing area and a cedar-lined hanging locker.
