Regal 20: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Overview

The Regal 3200 is the largest bow rider in Regal's lineup, measuring 32 feet in length with a 10 foot 4 inch beam. It is designed as a multifunctional day boat that balances performance with entertainment capabilities. Equipped with ample power, a spacious cockpit, and a full head compartment, the 3200 is well-suited for family outings and social gatherings on the water.

Exterior Design and Deck Layout

The bow area comfortably seats six adults and features versatile seating arrangements. The forward seat cushion conceals a carry-on cooler, while the starboard seat folds up to reveal a large storage compartment housing two removable teak tables. Gas shocks assist in lifting the seat for easy access. Optional filler cushions transform the bow seating into dual-chase lounges, ideal for relaxing or dining with the teak tables in place. The aft cockpit offers double-wide seating and dual ultra lounges that can face forward or aft, or lay flat for sunbathing. Teak table mounts are available both in the bow and aft cockpit areas, enhancing versatility. The swim platform has been extended and seamlessly molded into the main deck to eliminate seams, improving aesthetics and functionality. Additionally, a power tower is installed which can be lowered to clear low bridges and includes a wakeboard tow point for water sports.

Interior Living Spaces

The Regal 3200 includes a full-size head located in the port console. This compartment is spacious, measuring 47 inches in height and 36 inches in width, and is equipped with cherry wood cabinetry, a functional glass sink, and an electric toilet with an optional pump-out feature. Ample under-cabinet storage and a porthole for ventilation contribute to the comfort and convenience of this space.

Helm and Cockpit Amenities

The helm station is positioned to starboard and features a vinyl-wrapped console with a double-wide seat and a fold-up bolster, allowing the captain to drive either seated or standing. Controls and gauges are ergonomically arranged for ease of use and enhanced forward visibility. Adjacent to the helm is a refreshment center equipped with a stainless steel sink, cup holders, a Corian countertop, hidden trash storage, and an under-counter pull-out cooler. The cockpit also offers optional amenities such as a 12-volt refrigerator to further support entertaining.

Power and Performance

The test model was powered by twin 300-horsepower Volvo Penta V8 engines with dual propellers. Regal offers a range of 11 engine configurations from Mercury and Volvo, delivering total horsepower options from 440 to 860. The 3200 demonstrated strong performance, planing in 2.7 seconds and reaching over 30 miles per hour in 5 seconds. It achieved a top speed of 51.2 miles per hour at 5100 RPM. The most efficient cruising speed was 27.5 miles per hour at 3000 RPM, consuming 12.6 gallons per hour and providing a range of approximately 295 statute miles. The hull design, featuring 21 degrees of deadrise at the transom and a sharp bow entry, ensured a smooth ride through wakes and waves without hull slap or loss of control. Handling was precise with quick response from the wheel and throttles, and the boat executed tight turns without side-slip even at speed.

Conclusion

The Regal 3200 is a luxury bow rider crafted for day cruising with an emphasis on entertainment and water sports versatility. Its spacious and adaptable seating, well-appointed helm and refreshment areas, full head compartment, and strong performance characteristics make it a compelling choice for families and enthusiasts seeking a capable and comfortable day boat.
